Best format? 160x120 640x480

I have some Home video's (older ones in some cases) that I want to transfer over to DVD's. I have an intel camera which I Have my vcr hooked up too. I use VS9 to record. There are several settings from 160 by 120 to 640 by 480 formats. Which would be the best to initially record into the program too? Will it make a big difference in the quality when the DVD is played on a tv? Also does it matter which format to record it onto the computer, .avi or another. I do realize there must be a size different I am working with about 300 gigs of free space.
thanks Bruce

Record at a resolution of 640x480, although that is still less than the Full D1 resolution of DVDs, which are 720x480 and 720x576 for NTSC and PAL, respectively.

As far as the file format is concerned, use AVI. Since you have lots of disk space, you can record uncompressed, or if disk space still matters, download the Huffyuv codec, which is lossless.
