smart proxy, smart rendering.. sounds smart!

Post by Charbax »

I am testing MediaStudio 8 and it looks quite good to edit the HDV from my HC1 camera..

Does it make the Smart PRoxies in the background and automatically uses the smart proxys in the editing preview windows? I would like my 1080i capture to be smart proxied to a DVD resolution de-interlaced fast encode, and to use that to smoothly do the editing.

And then about the Smart Rendering, does it literally copy and paste like Virtual Dub's Direct Stream Copy when there are parts of the edit that are equal to the original capture? How about the parts that have effects or titles, can those be re-encoded to HDV at maximum quality? Shouldn't that part of the renders be much slower than the parts that are smartly copied and pasted from the original HDV capture file?

I would like to test also VideoStudio 9 to see it's HC1 HDV editing capabillities.. Does VideoStudio 9 also have Smart Proxy, Smart Render and 100% quality HDV video processing? It just seems there is no possibillity to test the HDV plugin for VideoStudio 9 as a free trial.. What are the main differences between VideoStudio 9 and MediaStudio 8?

Smart Proxy does indeed do the downsamle in the background and use it automatically. SP's setups are in the Preferences dialog and allow you to set VCD, DVD or DV (both 4:3 and 16:9) templates.

You can also set up custom proxy templates by modding an existing one to use the softcodec of your choice. I mod the DV template to use the PICVideo MJPeg codec (Morgans would work as well) because the downsample conversion is much faster than converting to the standard templates (at least it was during the beta). Once the new template is defined you can also save it with its own distinctive name for later re-use.

Smart Render has been in MSPro for a LONG time. Basically if the source matches the project settings (EX: DV clips in a DV project) it copies unchanged frames bit for bit and only recompresses frames with changes (overlays, filters etc.). This saves a ton of time when exporting to the edit format.

VS9 does not have Smart Proxy but it does have Smart Render.

VS9 is an entry level product. It has many very nice features, including many in MSP8 (Multi-Trim, SmartSounds etc.), but can only do 1 overlay layer. VS9 is great for quick projects, but definitely not in MSP8's league.

MSP8 can do 98 overlays over the background for a total of 99 audio and video tracks. It also has features like multiple timelines, virtual clips (use one timeline as a clip in another timeline or timelines), 5.1 Dolby audio etc. etc.
