Disc Image versus DVD Folders

Post by JSoule »

I am new to DVDWS2. I am completing my first project. Have been unable to determine from the manual and tutorials what the difference is between Disc Image and DVD Folders at the stage where I am about ready to burn. :( When and why would one create DVD Folders as opposed to Disc Image? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? All the manual SEEMS to say is that Disc Image is the way to go if you want to burn multiple DVDs. Thanks in advance for your help.

dvd folders or disc image

hi, if you want to play back your DVD on your PC, select DVD folders. this creates the necessary folders in your PC that you need to be able to watch your DVD on your PC using a DVD playback software. if you plan to burn your masterpiece onto several discs, select disc image file.

by creating a disc image file, you create an exact copy of your finished project ... you do not have to go through the processing/encoding (which can take a long time) at the finish step. just burn the disc image file in the future.

if you just want to burn your project onto a disc without creating a DVD folder or disc image, choose Burn Project to Disc on the remote control in the finish step.

One could say the same thing for DVD folder, also already processed, ready to burn.

Yes, the advantage of saving to a DVD folder is that you can test it out, make sure it works, before burning to a DVD.

Advantages of saving to a DVD folder include
1. You can use DVD shrink if you find it don't quite fit.
2. You can do further processing with programs like PGCEdit.
3. You can view it with WinDVD or other similar programs to make a final check that the menu's etc work correctly, sound is in synch etc.

Personally I never use the disc image method, even when burning off several copies.

If I know I'm going to make multiple copies, I always save an ISO image file. This is the basic format for burning DVDs and is less likely to cause glitches than copying "ready-made" video files. It is also a useful archiving format.

you can extract the contents of an ISO image file using WinRAR. It will also give you DVD folders when you extract it.
