Capture Troubles!! - Tried Everything from Forum!!

Post by DonnieDark0 »

I'm a new Video Studio 8 user who is having troubles capturing my video from my Sony Digital 8 camcorder to my notebook computer. Trouble is glitches and "digital blur" upon capture and playback. I'll provide as much detail as possible.
camera: Sony TRV320 Digital 8 camcorder
computer: Toshiba Notebook w/Pentium4 3.2 ghz & 512mb RAM (448 available) connected to camera w/IEEE 1394 Firewire card

I am trying to create DVDs from home movies for family.
Using program default of capturing in DV, I get "stuttering" and "digital blur" where I can see pixels upon movement and there are numerous glitches. I am using the "split by scene" function, which is a must for me. I am able to capture without problem to the "DVD" format (MPEG2). In order to eliminate the same glitches I had to adjust the "bit rate value" from the default 8000 to 6000. My problem with capturing in MPEG2 is that the program does not "split by scene", instead giving me 1 large file with all the shots of my daughter's firsts!

I have successfully captured video using the same setup and Windows Movie Maker. That program created 1 file also, but showed clips within the program. I tried to import this file in VS8, but it did not show the clips, rather it was one large scene.

I have tried the tips suggested in this forum, without any luck. I have purchased a different virus protection, defragmented my hardrive, disconnected from the internet, disabled programs through the windows task manager, etc... Also, using DV, you cannot specify to capture lower field first. I just need to capture the video without glitches and with the "split by scene" feature.

Thanks for the help! :)

Just capture the video without Split by Scene. Then do the Split by Scene in the Editor.

^^^^ What he said. I capture movie to MPEG; it's in the project as one big file; select that file; then in options panel I use Split By Scene and it automatically has all the date/time points recorded/found during capture. Works perfectly. The MPEG file is still one big file, but the scenes are intact that I created in-camera.

One other possibility in your DV/AVI captures is to change the encoder from Type 2 (which VS 8 uses as default) to Type 1 (which most people find causes less problems). In the Capture pane, click on the Options cogwheel half way down the left side of screen. You change the Encoder Type there. (Type 2, by the way, captures video and audio in separate streams. Type 1 captures in one stream. People often have trouble with Type 2, manifesting itself as suttering video and/or audio and out of synch video/audio; as well as tons of dropped frames...)
