Precautions/packaging when mailing a DV tape

Post by matlander »

What do I need to do to insure that a mini DV tape doesn't get jacked up when I mail it to a friend? I know this might be a little off topic, but please help its important and I'm not finding much out.

Your biggest concern should be that the tape gets crushed or exposed to extreme temperatures and/or moisture. Magnetic fields would have to be extremely strong to damage the tape.

I would put the tape and a small bag of desiccant (silica gel) into a Ziploc bag, and put that and some packing peanuts or bubblewrap into a small, sturdy cardboard box. The desiccant will soak up condensation that might form if the tape is exposed to bad weather or extreme temperature changes (think airplane cargo hold or sea shipment).
