Clip Volume Changes When .VSP File is Reopened

Post by profk99 »

This is my first full project with VS (VS9.00.1000), coming from Pinnacle S9+ (too frustrating!, so please excuse me if this is a simplistic question.

I have a video with narration, and have tediously adjusted audio levels on the video clips, narration clips, and music track to get the effect I want. It is very impressive to see what can be done on a notebook while on a trip!

The Problem:

After I burn a successful DVD, and try to reload the same .VSP to do that one last tweak (of many "last tweaks"), I find that the audio levels set with the Clip Volume control on the Music and Voice panel have changed! Many, but not all, of the video clips are reset to 100, while some of my narration clips are set to zero! Perhaps my computer resents having to do my little compusive changes? :D

Please check my understanding: The rubberbanding (very frustrating but great) adjusts the profile of the audio changes during a clip, while the Clip Volume adjusts the absolute level of the clip. So if I set the rubber band to reduce background sound during a narration clip, then restore it, i can use the Clip Volume control to change the overall background level without having to tweak the rubber band (very tricky on a notebook touchpad). Right?

And the clip volume is not temporary; it should persist across editing an burning sessions, right?

Thanks in advance.

I'm away from my machine at the moment so unable to do a test check.
Might sound silly but did you "save" your VSP after your latest edits before closing VS9 and progressing to another project?

Hi Bob,
I just tried to reproduce your problem. I threw together a 1 minute video adding a music track, and rendered it. I saved the VSP, closed VS9. Then reopened VS9, loaded the project and checked to see if the volumes had been reset or changed. They stayed as I had set them.

I can't figure out why your settings are not being preserved, unless you closed VS and didn't save any changes.

Clip Volume Changes

Thanks for for your interest!

Although the problem was real (happened three separate times and on dozens of clips each time), it has gone away! It appeared when I was working on a video while visiting family in Chicago. I was using my wife's new Compaq Presario v4000 laptop.

When I returned to NJ and completed the work on my own system, I found only one instance of a volume change, and I am not ABSOLUTELY sure it wasn't my error.

So it apparently is one of the following:

o A problem with the laptop or my installation on the laptop.
o A geographical phenomenon in the Midwest
o One of those little things that make computing so much fun

It's great to find a community of people who are willing to jump in and help when you get in trouble. Thanks again!
