multi-trim editing digital file

After I perform this step and then save the individual clips as new individual files can I delete the original, larger digital file?

Need a little more information on exactly how you are doing that John - because in many cases when you edit it does not affect the original at all and does not create extra video files - the thumbnails in your library are just 'pointers' to a section of your large file, - so depending exactly on how you did the multi-trim removing the large file may remove everything.

One clue would be if you can actually locate the smaller clips on your PC in 'My Computer' then you would know that they were safe and you could delete the large one.

I then took the individual thumbnails and created a new video file for each of the clips under the share tab and gave a it a unique name. It now iappears as a separate file in the list in a directory on my hard drive.

John,
Yes, you can delete the original after manually making video files of each "virtual" clip - however, you are really doing it the hard way!

Use "Save Trimmed Video" in the Clip menu, which accomplishes the same thing much more simply.

When I use Multi-Trim Editing on, say, a 45-second clip, and choose two 15-second parts of it which I want to save (discarding the balance), I see the original clip material now divided in two on the Storyboard.

Till now I've just believed what I saw--that there are now two clips. Is this not true? I've never taken the trouble to check (and don't think I will do so now).

If you put a large clip in the timeline and then split it up multiple times say using the scissors icon and then maybe delete a few bits in the middle and ends your timeline/storyboard will be showing multiple clips - BUT - they are only thumbnails pointing to parts of your one big video file - doing it that way your original captured file is still intact and untouched and no new video files have been created on your computer. - easy enough to check just split up a clip in that way and then search your hard drive.
