DVD menu - o.k. on computer screen/not on TV (VS9)

I am having a problem with the menu template on VS9.....the title menu looks fine when previewing it prior to burning the DVD and also is fine on a computer when playing the DVD. Unfortunately, when I view the DVD via a standard DVD player and TV (non-widescreen), the menu is cropped. I am using my own background image for the menu after selecting one of the VS9 templates. The video output is 4:3.....are some of the templates 16:9?

I believe some of the backgrounds on the "bonus" content CD are 960x540 (16:9). I have a folder containing 36 of these which AFAIK were installed by VS9.
