MP4 Plugin Installer erased my templates!

Post by rdenny »

Installing the new MP4 plugin erased all of my (important) Make Movie Manager templates! Bad news!

I have a backup of my disk from before I installed the MP4 plugin. Where are these templates kept? Heaven help me if they are in the registry...

The HDV Plugin does the same thing -- take a look at THIS thread for more information.

I saw that, but silly me... I thought that only the HDV plugin would do it. I suspect the installer developers couldn't figure out how to save the existing templates when installing the new ones for MPEG-4. I'm going to keep looking. I also have a tech support request into ULead but they are batting .800 for telling me to uninstall and reinstall as a solution! That has never fixed any of the problems I reported.

OK, here's how to restore your Make Movie Manager templates after the MP4 installer wipes them out... if you have a backup of your system. The templates are located in a file c:\Documents and Settings\your-name\Application Data]\ULead Systems\ULead VideoStudio\9.0\MovieTem.dat. The MP4 installer wipes out your old one, and replaces it with a new one containing some MP4 templates.

Make a backup copy of MovieTem.dat before installing the MP4 template

Once you have installed the MP4 plugin, save a copy of the new MovieTem.dat, I copied it to MovieTem-MP4.dat. Then replace the new MovieTem.dat with your old one. Now your old templates will be available. Next copy that MovieTem.dat to something like MovieTem-Mine.dat. Now you have MovieTem-MP4.dat and MovieTem-Mine.dat. You can copy either of those on top of MpovieTem.dat to get whichever set of templates you want.

Alternatively, before replacing the new MovieTem.dat with your old one, go through the MP4 templates and write down all of the settings (or make screen shots). Then, after you replace the new one with the one containing your original templates, create the three MP4 templates using the info you noted.

I don't know of any way to merge MovieTem.dat files, and I suspect this is what the plugin installer developers were faced with. They should have at least saved your templates to a backup file! Just wiping them out is rather crude.
