VHS to DVD resolution

Post by Conan the Barbarian »

Hi guys

I recently purchased an AverMedia EZmaker USB Pro 2.0 which came bundled with Ulead MF2 and Video Studio 7. Both seem to work fine. However I am new to this video thing and I have come up with a problem which I hope I can find an answer for here.

I just finished burning a really excellent quality VHS original video to DVD using MF2 and a bitrate of 8000 Kbs. and the result has been somewhat disappointing in that the DVD quality is a good deal lower [not nearly as sharp] than the original tape. Could there be a prob with my setup / configuration / ability or is that lower quality something to be expected and par for the course. BTW I'm using S-video input not composite.

Any help will be very much appreciated

Under "Preferences" make sure to have Resampling Quality set to "Best".

Are you capturing directly to Mpeg2? or .avi file.
If your capturing realtime there are a few settings probably to tweak to
get good resolution.

Same with VideoStudio7. If using VS7 make sure to goto the website and
download & install the updates if they apply to your version.

Hope this helps,

Did you watch the DVD on the same television, that you watched the VHS tape?

If you only have watched the created DVD on your computer, that could have something to do with the problem. A computer screen is much higher resolution than a standard TV screen, and therefore imperfections in the video will be more apparent on the computer screen.

yes Me, same TV but I agree that it does look much better on my monitor - haha.

Mad, this tweaking thing is facinating but i have no idea where to start - tweaking, I mean. I can get to some sliders for the Video proc filter but but what to do from there is a mystery. Can you help here?

Thanks again for your interest in my problem guys

You should be able to get acceptable results...

I took a quick look at the AverMedia web site, and it looks like your capture device is capturing to MPEG-2. (This is what DVDs use.)

MPEG is "lossy" compression, so for best quality your video should be MPEG-2 encoded only once. If you change the bitrate (even to a higher bitrate) the file will be decoded & re-coded, which will degrade the quality.

If you must capure to MPEG, check the Do not convert compliant MPEG files box, under Project Settings.

If your capture device can capture to AVI, do it that way. Movie Factory will perform the MPEG encoding during the DVD rendering / burning operation.

It is possible that your capture device is the source of the problem. And, athough DVDs have better quality than VHS, a digital copy of an analog tape will never be quite as good as the original tape. There is an extra analog-to-digital conversion which is not perfect, and MPEG-2 has it's own limitations & weaknesses which are added to the analog-VHS limitations & weaknesses.

Also, note that editing MPEGs requires a decode / re-code operation. Edited MPEG video will be degraded (during the parts that were edited). Even worse, I've experienced the dreaded "lip-sync" problem after editing MPEGs.
