I am having trouble editing text. I know I am doing something wrong because no one else is having this issue with such a simple task.
Using PaintShop Pro 2023 Ultimate on Windows 10. (Also happens in PSP 2022 Ultimate).
What's happening:
I use the Text tool to write a sentence in a Layer dedicated to the sentence.
I select and copy the text box window and paste it as an image under a second tab.
I use the Text tool and left click on a letter in the sentence within the text box.
As soon as I left click on a letter within the sentence, a new undesired layer containing text is created and opens on top of the original layer.
The text within the new layer is something I may have typed and cut or copied hours before.
So when I type on the keyboard, I am editing the new layer.
I then delete the new layer, but as soon as I left click on the desired text to attempt editing again, again a new layer is created.
I have rebooted Windows. And I have restarted PSP.
Please let me know what I'm missing.
Thanks!

Re: Text Editing problem
I think the problem is that text handled in a vector format can be edited. But text in a raster format cannot be edited. If that is correct, then text should never be converted to a raster format unless you know you won't want to edit it.
Perhaps it is obvious that once text is converted to a raster format, the letters become pixels and you shouldn't expect to edit the pixels with the Text tool.
I had been handling text boxes as individual layers. Maybe that is not something that you should do (??)

Re: Text Editing problem
PSP typically only creates a whole new layer if you have a non-vector layer selected.
Some things I want you to look at and for.
1) Is the text being created as a vector/text object? Look at both the layer icon, and the "Create As" drop-down on the tool options palette.
While editing text it does create a vector layer or adds a new text object to the current vector layer, but once you apply the text it performs one of three actions based on what the "Create As" drop down says. Here are two screenshots, first is the layer. A vector layer has an icon that looks like a circle in front of a rectangle. WHen you scroll open this layer you see all of the objects that are on the layer, in this case a text object which has a "T" icon on it indicating it's a text object.
Here's a screenshot of the "Create As" drop down on the tool options palette. This will have three options: Vector, Selection, Floating. Vector keeps it as a vector layer. Selection turns it into a selection outline. And Floating makes it a floating selection with Raster data. It's no longer a vector when you choose Selection or Floating and can no longer be edited like one.
2) Is the copy being created a s vector/text object/layer?
Again, just like above, after you've pasted in the layer look at the icons, is it a vector layer with a text object inside of it?
3) Is that new layer actually selected in the layers palette when you go to create your new text object?
Just do a quick double check and make sure the current vector layer or text object is highlighted in the layers palette before you click. It should not create a new layer if the vector layer is selected.

Re: Text Editing problem
Thank you LeviFiction!!
Your explanation makes all the sense in the world. What I think I now know is don't convert text from a vector format to raster if it is ever to be edited.
Yes. The text was being created as a vector object. And when the vector layer is selected, a new layer is not created.
What I was doing with the text was using Barrel, Pincushion, and fisheye on it. PSP was smart enough to convert the vectorized text to a raster format in order to perform those "graphics" functions to the "text". Then, (obvious to me now) those tools wouldn't apply to a vector component. And once the change takes place, I won't expect to use a Text Editor on the results.
I'll continue to review your well thought out explanation and thank you for explaining the appearance and purpose of the icons involved.

Re: Text Editing problem
Thank you Kathy_9! I hadn't noticed that.
I'm assuming the transition has already occurred. I'll go there.
Thanks for letting me know.
Frank
