Closure of User to User Forums

Post by Ken Berry »

In case you have not already seen it, there is an announcement at the top of this and other forums that Alludo has decided to close these forums down from 12 February. People with problems with the software will be redirected to Support.

See https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?t=70632

Huh....gonna need to make sure I've got copies of all of my scripts downloaded then. Thanks for the notice.

I expect nothing less from an investment company.

Hi Levi,
can you make a "complete" package of all your scripts, I mean a hard work you have done, over the years, and give here a link to download? Thank you very much.

Most of my scripts are on my website, link in my signature. There are only a few early ones that were only uploaded to these forums. Thankfully the "manage attachments" page under the user control panel lets me go through all of my attachments and the topics they're attached to for context.

If these forums weren't available I would not have bought a newer version of PSP last year.
So is there a grass roots move to another forum like reddit, or some other alternative PSP user to user forum?

Update: Search found reddit already has r/paintshoppro/ but its unviewable with message - "This subreddit was banned due to being unmoderated." :?

Carole Cassell came with this idea:
Maybe some users could send a private message to Kevin, the one who posted the announcement in the forum. Share your thoughts if you feel like the forum is still a useful place to go.
Admin FB Paintshop Pro NLD for dutch users.

I would even accept a general forum like this one, section Windows Software:

https://www.elevenforum.com/questions/apps-software/

With one single title like:
Corel PaintShop Pro 2023 (released date: Aug 4, 2022)
and all topics will be in one thread.

About 300-400 per year?

Like VideoStudio, there are a couple of Facebook groups on PaintShop Pro. One is public and called simply PaintShop Pro, while the other is private and called Everything Paint Shop Pro. So I am not sure there is any need to set up a new and separate forum.

For me Facebook is no good, hate normal social media. But there are indeed lots of communities available all over the internet. This one really only had Corel's name on it. If someone wants to take on the challenge of managing a new forum and let everyone know before the deadline, more power to you I say.

I don't use facebook either. After some searching I believe reddit just needs a moderator to unlock either reddit forum?

I have no idea how much time or money it costs for Alludo to maintain this forum. Is that the reason they are doing this?

Also, I have no idea what it takes in terms of time and resources to set up a Discord channel. Is it possible someone could set up such a channel that would work similar to this forum, including a Scripts subchannel to which everything from the Scripts sub-forum could be moved? Just a thought from an uninformed user

I can't speak for Alludo but I can tell you that Ken, Trevor and I are volunteers who are not paid, so no cost there. phpBB forum software is open source and free so no cost there. https://www.phpbb.com/

The only unknown is the cost of hosting.

Then perhaps one of you could find out from Alludo why they want to do this. It if'it's not costing more than hosting then it doesn't make sense to me to cause disruption with a forum that is working well. Nobody trusts the Corel support page, we''ll likely lose all the back stuff that can presently be searched and the same with the scripting sub forum.

I have no hope of getting real info, though I would be curious about the impossibility of handing off the site and moving it to another host. Though would need statistics on bandwidth, database size, and storage requirements to calculate hosting costs.

Of course we made these arguments to Alludo, but they would have been well aware that such arguments would be made, and had dismissed them well in advance of making the announcement. It was even possibly a done deal soon after Alludo took over Corel, and there is probably little to nothing which would change their minds or strategy... And what that strategy is in relation to the future of the programs themselves, remains to be seen.
