Novice Advice on Selection and Layers

Post by cosmarchy »

Hi,

I am a complete novice when it comes to PSP so I am looking for some help for a few things I need to achieve.

I have PSP Pro 2023 and am trying to create different layers for different colours. The first thing I need to do is select all red lines. Now at the moment I have used the Magic Wand tool and that does well in so far as all the red that is joined by a pixel is selected but I'd need to go around and add every bit of red int he image. So,is there a way to select all the red (and slight shades which look red but are in reality not exactly RGB 255,0,0) in the entire image in one go?

Once I have all the red selected, I need to move it to another vector layer. What tools would I need to use to do this? Can I create new vector layer and move selection in one go?

Now that this is on its own layer, I need to change everything to RGB 255,0,0. How would I do this?

Finally, if I move all colours to their own respective vector layers (ie blue its own layer, green to its own layer etc) how do I ensure each layer lines up with the layers above and below it?

If anyone can guide me through these steps, it would be appreciated. I'm sure it's probably easy enough when you know how!!

Thanks

1) To make the magic wand select all pixels in an image that match a certain color, look at the tool options and make sure to have "contiguous" unchecked. "Contiguous" means "Sharing a common border or touching" and when it's turned on PSP will limit it's selection to only those pixels that are touching each other. The second there is a gap it stops looking.

2) Yes you can, you can right-click on the layers palette and choose "Promote selection to layer" which will auto create a new layer from the selected pixels. Duplicating the selection. I mention it's using "duplicate" because it won't delete or remove the selected pixels from the original layer. It'll simply copy the selection to a new layer. So if this is okay, then you're done. But if you wanted it filled in with another color, or deleted you'll need to do that before using "Select None" to remove your selection.

3) There are several ways to do this. But the easiest for a pure color is to use the fill tool and click on the "lock" icon on the layers palette to lock the current transparency. Set the "match mode" to "None" and click. It should ignore the transparent pixels, and fill in everything else with the color you have selected on the materials palette.

4) The "promote selection to layer" because it copies, the original lines will be in the exact same location they were on the original layer.
