UVS7 controlling camcorder

Post by niklvideo »

I am having trouble getting UVS7 to control my Panasonic PV-DV51D. When I first started using both there was no problem. After about a year and half hiatus, I am now trying again to use the Panasonic with UVS7. I can capture if I simply hit play on the Panny and capture on the menu, but I can no longer do batch capture (which was such a nice feature to use!)

WindowsXP recognizes the camcorder, as does Roxio DVD Builder. Roxio even controls the camera as UVS7 used to do.

Does anyone know if the driver for my camcorder changed? Is there some work around so that I can batch capture again? I searched the boards, but could not get any posts that really addressed this problem. Any help or suggestions (or previous threads) would be greatly appreciated, as I am currently working on editing a wedding video... :? trying to get b-roll loaded for overlays.

Have you any other capture devices attached like a TV card or even a webcam?
I noticed that I had to specify the capture format as either DV or AVI for Video Studio to recognise and control my camcorder, anything else and it only lists the TV card. Also if you have a webcam you need to disconnect it.

It is the same firewire video capture card and video card I have had since I began with UVS6 (bundled with the firewire capture). I upgraded to UVS7 and it was a little iffy, but no real problems a reboot of program or cam wouldn't fix. I do have a webcam for my system, but it is a USB connection and is generally disconnected from my system. The ONLY change to my system has been a couple of new modems (as two were fried even with surge protectors) and a DVD burner which was added prior to the problems.
When I open up UVS7 to the capture menu, it comes up as DV format with Panasonic MSDV as the source, again just the way it always has. But the control panel beneath the monitoring display is grayed out with the exception of the volume control...
Baffling, huh???

My Webcam is also USB and I found it prevents Video Studio 9 from detecting my Camcorder on a Firewire connection. If I disconnect the Webcam and THEN turn on the camcorder VS9 then detects it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but...
I have tried that, as the webcam is NOT plugged in. It does somehow default to WEBCAM as the source WITHOUT it being plugged in. Also I did notice this error message as I tried once again to get it to acknowlege the camcorder upon opening UVS7...

Failed to initialize the video capture plug in. Another program may be using it or the file has been moved. Capture driver is not properly installed.

Is there a knowledge base that I can access for Ulead? Could Roxio have hijacked it? Anyone have any similar experiences with this error message? I have also tried searching for info on drivers for WinXP and Panasonic... Would reinstalling UVS7 perhaps do the trick?

Videostudio won't be able to control the camcorder using a USB connection -- you need to use a Firewire cable for that.

Just did some tests.

1. opened VS9 with camcorder AND Webcam turned OFF.
2. Plugged in the WebCam - New Device detected and was able to see myself in the webcam.
3. Unplugged WebCam.
4. Turned on Camcorder. VS9 Crashed.
5. Restarted VS9 with Camcorder still on - got your error message.
6. Turned OFF Camcorder.
7. Closed VS9
8. Restarted VS9
9. Turned Camcorder back ON. Camcorder now detected.

Wasn't that lucky with mine.
After unplugging webcam and turning on camcorder, it switched to Panasonic as source, but did NOT crash. Still have the problem of controls being greyed out. Even if I shut down and restart again, it acknowledges the camera, I just don't get the control panel activated.
This is just killing me!!! I appreciate your time and attempts at assistance, fruitless as they have been.

:) Well, I finally heard back from tech support and it boiled down to an uninstall-reinstall scenario. Not what I wanted to hear from them, but it really did the trick! Now I can finish my project. In order to help others, I am posting the response with instructions provided. Hope it doesn't happen to anyone else, but if it does...

1)Clean up temp files in c:\windows\temp

2)Uninstall VideoStudio from Control Panel Add/Remove programs

3)Reinstall VideoStudio again

4)Upgrade your VideoStudio from 7.0 to 7.01 by installing the patch
that you can download from our website:

http://www.ulead.com/tech/vs/vs_ftp70.htm

5) Plugin the IEEE1394 DV card(PCMCIA IEEE 1394).

6) In Device Manager of Control Panel/System, 1394 Bus Controller
=>1394 Host Controller should be listed.

7) Connect the DV camcorder to the DV card, then turn on the DV
camcorder.

Be sure in Control Panel/System/Device Manager/there is an Image device
and you can open the "+" to see 'Microsoft DV Camera and VCR'(Win ME or
XP you will see your DV camcorder model).

8) Run VideoStudio 7 and go to the Capture step.

9) Select Format > DV then VideoStudio 7 will be able to detect your DV
device automatically.

And yes, I did disconnect and reseat the firewire card in the pci slot as a precautionary measure. The reinstall solved the problem, and it still worked after the update patch was installed.

Thanks again for your attempts at assistance sjj1805! :D
