B&W images using a Gradient map?

Post by GeoffwithaG »

I'd be grateful if someone would provide a step by step guide on how to create a greyscale image using a gradient map. I found a YouTube video for Photoshop, but couldn't find a work around in PS Pro 2023.

PSP does not have a gradient map option built-in. It is possible to simulate it with curves but the best bet for an easy time is to use either a plugin or a script to simulate a gradient map.

The only plugin I can think of that would run in PSP2023 is G'Mic but I don't know if it has a gradient map option.

As for scripts, this is a bit of self-promotion but I have two scripts that each use different methods to simulate a gradient map. The first is based on creating a color palette from a gradient and decreasing the colors of the image down to 256 to apply it. You can find the script with video demonstration here.

Curves gradient maps, don't really work with B&W. They are meant for color photos only. And they aren't an exact equivalent. But still they do work for tonal color changes. These two scripts deal with the curves options.

Script #2 is by someone called teammouse they used curves to achieve a gradient map simulation - https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=63266

Last script option is my second script that is a mixture between my first script and teammouse's method of using curves - https://levifiction.wordpress.com/2018/ ... dient-map/

EDIT: I pasted the wrong link to the Curves Gradient Map script, so this has been updated to reflect that.
