PSP 2023 Slow UI

Post by swarhurst »

Hi.

I have been using Jasc PSP 9 (from 2004!) for years and years and decided to take Corel up on the discounted offer for PSP 2023 Ultimate, to get access to new features and improve on the aspects of PSP 9 that were a bit lacking.

There's a re-assuring familiarity between the 2 versions in the sense that things I'm used to being able to do are all still there and work in the same way.... except for one thing...

My workflow in PSP9 would often involve having the Browser open, and using that to browse existing images on disk and open them from there. However, in 2023 the browser has been moved to the Manage tab and the editor is separate, so they are both effectively separate windows (in PSP9 the browser opened within the editor). That they are in two separate tabs/windows wouldn't be so bad if switching between them was instant but they're not (for me).

If I select an image in Manage then switch to Edit it takes quite a long time to load up - around 5-6 seconds, seemingly regardless of the size of the image. In PSP9 the image loads pretty much instantly which it should really as my PC is less than 2 yrs old with 32GB RAM and an Intel i9-10900K CPU. Switching back from Edit to Manage takes around 3 seconds which is still pretty slow and in PSP9 instant.

I can't help but think that part of it is that the software is having to to load a whole new window each time you switch between Manage and Edit. Even switching back to the Home tab is pretty slow - about 3-4 seconds again - and very jerky in that it flicks between tabs a few times before it decides to render the home screen.

If I untick "disabled hardware acceleration" in general settings the timings get worse, i.e: everything takes twice as long.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any solutions?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

In the Edit tab, go to View - Palettes and check Organizer. You can navigate via the Organizer Palette.

Hope that helps.

Hello,
Did using the Organizer help?
I have had a problem with a laggy version of PSP 2023 on Windows 11 Pro. Using the Organizer made no difference in my case. My holiday projects had to be completed with an older version of PSP because I had to meet a deadline. I have never been so disappointed in a PSP version. It has been nothing but slowness and freezing. I reinstalled v. 2023 after the first patch created issues. When the second patch was announced, I tried to install that, but installation told me I did not need it. Well, ok, but no improvement in navigation or processing images. I really hope there is a third patch. One thing I have noticed is that the problem is worse when working on images over 900X900 pixels and navigating folders containing large images. Maybe the devs can do something with that information to find a fix.

I think what the OP says is that the UI is very slow.
Whenever you change workspace, os maximize/minimize, you can almost see the workarea being redrawn.

This is probably an issue back to the core of the language and technique used to program PSP
