I'm having trouble figuring out these color change options.
I've a celtic graphic - basically a bunch of circles and triangle sand the like. It was a color image - photgraph - but messy.
So I changed it to 2-colors -that got rid of all the crap of 'near white' and 'near black'. Then I subsequently increased the color depth. Now I want to change some of the black parts to color - the original image had the innermost square part as red and white not black and white. So I use the selection tool to select that innermost square. But from here I'm stymied.
The color changer tool: I carefully place the focus on the black lines but it changes the white to red. (image 1). Similarly the color replacer tool: it changes the white to red in the circular shape of the tool properties. (image 2)
All I want to do is to change the black to red in this box (or elsewhere but perhaps not the whole image... It seems like this is what the color changer tool should do - "You can use the Color Replacer tool to replace one color in a selection or layer with another color. You can use brushstrokes to replace only those pixels that the brush touches, or you can replace all pixels of a certain color in a selection or layer.". It's behaving much more like 'flood fill'.

Re: color replacer vs color changer vs...
With the color replacer brush you need to have the black color selected as the background color on the materials palette. It sounds like you have white as the background color. This is because the color replacer brush replaced the background color with the foreground color. It's meant for flat colors like you're using here.
You don't want to use the color changer fill tool because it's a flood fill tool that is meant for clothing and complex items to change their color.
