How is VS for Long Projects?

Post by Beelzebob »

I want to make a movie that will be roughly 90 minutes long. It will include 225 clips and 50 titles. I won't be doing anything fancy. Is VS robust enough to handle that? I used to use Vegas Movie Studio but they stopped making it. It was a great product. Until I found Vegas Movie Studio, I had tried several other NLEs that weren't up to the task . I like what I see so far with VS, just don't want to work a whole lot and find it won't render a long file or crashes or something like that. Thanks for any help.

I have some films on YT that are over 90 minutes long, e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQReGCLCUX8. These were made using VS, so yes, VS can produce long videos. That said, problems rendering a long VSP can arise if the video clips are not uniform in nature, e.g. 30fps, 60fps, and certain filters are used. In such cases, you can render your long VSP in parts and finally join the parts into a final VSP that VS can render.

Alternatively, rather than VS, you might want to investigate using DaVinci Resolve, if you're willing to tackle its learning curve.

Thanks for responding, I appreciate it. I took a look at Davinci Resolve and got very frustrated with it. I will be using the same format clips throughout the project, so maybe I will get lucky with VS. I also tried the Premiere Elements demo, it crashed for me three times just doing simple things with three small clips. Thanks again for responding. I wasn't sure I would get an answer, this board seems very light on usage.

As long as you're okay with saving every other change, it should be reasonably okay. It'll slow down a bit, as you progress. I usually only make shorter videos, around 4/8 minutes, but on occasions longer. Overall, as long as you're prepared for the random crashes, give it a go.

Hey Beelzebob
I'd exercise caution with large/long projects. I've been struggling to complete a project with ~1200 photos for about 2 years now with 2 different version.
I struggled with VS 2021 with constant crashing at random times while building the transitions, or dragging photos, or dragging frames, etc, etc. I haven't determined when or why this happens. Save often but even then I've received out of memory errors even when saving (I have an i7 Intel and more than enough memory with 32GB of RAM and VS only using ~ 4 GB) so there is something with the software with limitations or memory de/allocation bugs.

I upgraded to 2023 and upgraded my project as well hoping for stability but nope, pretty much the same unstable experience BUT now I have the top corner of my photos cut out. I can't go back unless I lose all my work since upgrading as VS 2023 is not backwards compatible.
See this topic for reference: https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?t=70025
Still no fix or response for Corel / Alludo.

I also took a look at Davinci Resolve which looks super slick and is fast but stalled out on the learning curve. To be fair, VideoStudio has many cool features and intuitive UI editing features. It's just that it crashes constantly and has a ton of bugs. It's really frustrating.

Good luck.

Thanks to everyone who has provided input on this topic. I must admit, I have not been able to make the VS demo crash, but I'm only working with a few clips. I like the ease of use. But in the end, I am probably going to buy Vegas Pro. I'm not happy paying $150 (on sale) when I don't need 90% of its features, but I am familiar with the software from using the consumer version, Vegas Movie Studio (which is no longer being made). I might buy VS anyway for short projects, as again, I like the ease of use. Thanks again for the help.

At least they're offering a new option of perpetual license like DaVinci. Have you looked at the new Humble Bundle deal for Vegas? As you said, you will only use some of it's features so the older version may suffice. Might as well save money and get extra sound loops for only $25.

Hope this helps.

I use both Videostudio and Vegas Pro for different projects. If you are already familiar with Movie Studio you will be very comfortable with 19 Pro and it is available inexpensively as Robert mentions. It was a solid and quite recent version with some great colour correcting and grading tools.

Wow, I did not know about the humble bundle offers and jumped on the $149 offer for Vegas Pro Edit 21 because it ended December 5th. I'm sure I would have been happy with version 19 that was offered with humble bundle. Oh well. It took a few days but I am working well in Vegas Pro now.

I also made videos over many years, with long projects of 40 -60 minutes, but with the latest VS ultimate Edition it is very irritating to get out of memory issues when saving. I never had any of these issues before. I discussed it on this forum nearly a year ago and am surprised that Corel did not fix the problem. I have a more powerful PC with more than enough memory, so how is this possible.
What I discovered is that if I get the out of memory message, it still saves the project, but it is very misleading.

I tried so many other video editors, but the learning curve is too much so I keep returning to VS and hope they fix the error without me needing to buy every latest version, which I normally do.

I haven't done exactly what you're planning, but I've thrown in a good number of clips and titles without any major issues. Just make sure your hardware is decent, and you should be good to go.
