PSP 2022 and webP files

Post by arturox »

Please, some advice would be appreciated.

I've been aware of WebP as a graphic file for some years, but hardly ever needed to interface with it.
Now everybody and their Aunty seems to be using WebP files. .. :-(

I'm running PSP 2022 on Win 10 and while my PSP 2022 will both load and save WebP files, in the Save dialogue the "Options" are greyed out.

Anyone know why this is so?

As it stands I have no idea if the files are saved in a lossy or lossless format and have non of the other control options that are supposed to be available...

Thanks

I believe it's the lossy version based on some quick tests. I saved as a webp file and then use the webpinfo program to read out the file properties. It's always lossy and zero transparency. Which makes sense considering the history.

PSP first introduced webp support close to a year after Google first released webp. A few weeks/months later Google updated Webp to include lossless and alpha support. PSP did not update to match until PSP 2023 Update 1. And I think they only added support for importing lossless webp, and alpha channels. I don't think they included saving support for those options.

I have a script for importing and exporting webp. I will have to edit it to include the export options if you want lossless though, and that may be a week away at best.

Thanks for that info, interesting and appreciated. :-)
I have downloaded your existing scripts (The one with the scripts and tools all in one zip) and installed them.

But for the time being, I shall have to continue with my current method of using XNView on any WebP files that I get. :-(
Thanks

Interesting, out of curiosity...
I've just done my own simple test set and Lossy is as you note the default.

From a .pspimage file of a cat.
Loaded in to PSP 2022. Info shows, in Disk 683K in Ram 1493K

As WebP file---Disk-------Ram
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Save out 01.---109K------1490K
Reload 01.-----109K------1490K

Saveout 02.----109K------1490K
Reload 02.-----109K------1490K

Saveout 03.----108K------1490K
Reload 03.-----108K ------1490K

And so on........107K------1490K
........................106K------1490K

Reload 07.------105K------1490K

The most interesting thing about this exercise, also repeated with other test files, is the image becomes increasingly Red with each action.

An aside, but relevant I think. :-/

A webP file Saved out of XNview as Lossless will not load in to PSP 2022.

But a webP file Saved out of XNview at 99% quality Will load in to 2022.

When dealing with these files I just open and convert to JPG using Irfanview. This way it will open fine using PSP 2022.

Setting quality to 99% makes sense as that's still lossy. It's the lossless mode specifically that it can't support.

@jimkirk363 why jpg and not png? The two main features of webp that PSP can't support are lossless encoding and alpha channels. JPG would destroy both removing the benefit of webp altogether. My webp script uses PNG as an intermediary for this reason.

Yes, my personal preference would be to convert to png, and has been for many years.
