Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
I record TV on PC with DTV cards and use .ts files because it has subtitles - having hearing problems and now need subtitles -, and now I want to edit out the commercials and keep the videos for future viewing.
I tried .m2t - it says MPEG Transport Stream Files -, but there is no subtitles in the render - there is a .upd file if that's anything -. I use PotPlayer and I can toggle on subtitles with the original .ts video, but not the X9 rendered .m2t video.
Is there a way to edit the .ts where the render also has subtitles.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
You should try Pot Player as I believe that can create subtitles from your video
https://www.journeybytes.com/extract-an ... potplayer/
If you can save as SRT file then you should be able to import/open subtitle file with X9
The latest version CVS2023 has a feature called Speech to Text which scans the video to create Titles / text, Translations are not always that accurate and some modification will be needed.
That may be the same using Pot Player

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Unfortunately PotPlayer doesn't seem able to do it, ie, the .srt and .txt are only 2min long.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Hi
I dont have any video with embedded subtitles to test PotPlayer, strange that it only used 2 minutes?
Googling Pot Player seems to indicate that the app does manage subtitles in fact seems to be one of its best features, so a little strange that it only used 2 minutes, I assume the video being much longer than that.
As a thought - were you playing the main video when trying to save the srt, or maybe just the intro / adverts
As you can turn the titles “on and off” you should be able to save the srt file.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Yeah it's kind-of weird it only does a few min from where you set it.
Here is a vid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8CiFR_1XA0
I tried a different channel in case it's a PC channel file record thing, but it's that same from 2 different channels.
PS: I just remembered when someone else talks that subtitle changes colour.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Did the subtitles change color during the actual broadcast? When you open the .srt with Notepad, do the lines contain color flag info? If so, I think Pot Player does not have the ability to read this color flag properly so it outputs it along with the other text.

Yes, each person speaking has a different colour in the orig .ts file
No, no colour attributes in the .txt file.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Are you able to share the video with us so we can try.
Afaik, Vlc media player can also manage subtitles, I am sure there must be other apps that can save subtitles.

I've been thinking, and I don't think any editor can do subtitles in the same format as these .ts files, because aren't we just ripping the subtitles off the .ts file and permanently pasting them on the video file in the form of a text layer, ie, NO turning subtitles off and on, and NO subtitles in different colours for different people,

Old Grey,
Thanks for allowing me access to your file.
I played around with it and actually learned a couple things along the way. I was able to create a .srt file with color flags from your .ts file using MPC-BE x64 and import this .srt file into DaVinci Resolve with no problems.
First lesson: One has to play the entire .ts file to create proper .srt file within MPC-BE x64. If one pauses or moves the jog bar it will only save subtitle to where the play was interrupted.
Second lesson: I hate to admit it but I found a flaw with DaVinci Resolve. It would not accept the .ts file natively so I had to convert it. I created a .mp4 file.
In this screenshot, I'm showing you the Preview window, timeline and placement of subtitles, video and audio tracks.

In these screenshots, I'm showing you how DaVinci was able to display colored subtitles correctly.

In this screenshot, I'm showing you how I would have manually removed a segment or commercial. If this clip had commercials, I would have used DaVinci's Detect Scene Cuts feature to make things easier.

P.S. Right click on images to Open in new tab.
After making all your cuts in DaVinci, one can go to the Deliver Page and render video along with exporting subtitles as a separate file (IMSC1, DFXP, SRT, WebVTT) or Burn into video.
Overall, MPC-BE x64 and DaVinci Resolve were capable of completing their tasks with some finesse.
Hope this helps.
Robert

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
When I play the whole file PotPlayer kind-of does the whole subtitle file, ie, has the colour code problem, and clips get out of sync.
Having to play the whole thing in MPC-BE is also a problem, because that will take maybe 200hrs - lol -. I have seen other apps the rip subtitles so I might look at them.
I was thinking about switching to DV, but it looked over-kill for the garbage I do - lol -, plus the insert subs into DV video that I found made it look like it had to be done manually, ie, your method is pretty simple.
Can DV turn subs off and on after rendering?, because it sounds like you have to point the player to the sub file and vid file.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
Unfortunately, .ts files are stream files with the added ability of embedding subtitles. Most programs are going to have a hard time with this. I even tried command lines in ffmpeg to extract .srt from .ts file and had no luck. Kept getting streams and duplicates errors. DownSub is a free online utility that works well but requires a URL. VideoHelp has some free software with good reviews. I would try CCExtractor or Subtitle Edit. https://www.videohelp.com/software/sections/subtitle
Regarding DaVinci Resolve, you only have the options I mentioned earlier. You can export subtitles as a separate file or burn them permanently into your final video.
MPC-BE x64 is smart enough to read the .srt associated with the video: .ts, .mp4, etc. and will automatically start playing if it is contained in the same folder. If not, one has to load .srt manually so the player can have the file path. I did not see shortcut keys to enable/disable subtitles within MPC-BE x64. One has to click on SUB at the bottom of the player and uncheck enable to disable, vice versa. Found it. You can toggle subtitles on/off using keyboard shortcut W.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
I kind-of figured as much. It would be good to turn subs off and on because I find myself reading the subs and forgetting to watch the vid - lol -, but what is more annoying when you watch a lot of comedy is missing the punchlines.
I've seen posts were people are ripping subs with different apps, so I might dig around and see if I can find something, ie, try that list, and see if I can tolerate permanent subs.
I saw a cryptic post were someone was editing the .ts directly with Video Disk Recorder (VDR), "So far I did my cutting with VDR which kept the subtitles without any additional work.", so I'm grabbing old parts off the shelf and making a Linux box to try it. It's DTV tuner recording software, but evidently it can edit .ts and keep subs.

Re: Edit .ts video keeping subtitles
When you say turn subs off and on, are you intending on watching the edited files on your PC using Pot Player, VLC, MPC-BE x64, etc. or on your TV via USB drive, media card or wifi? I failed to mention earlier DaVinci also has a subtitle export option for embedded captions -Text. This is only offered for certain file types. I just tested a sample with MKV and it works. Caveat no colored subtitles. You lose colors but since the Text is embedded when watching on your TV with USB drive or media card, one can use the remote to turn on/off captions.
