How to draw basic shapes (ovals etc)? Is importing from another program the only option?
How can I add basic shapes like rectangles and arrows? Eg if I want to freeze a frame for a few seconds, and put a rectangle or oval around a specific detail to highlight it.
I see in the guide https://help.corel.com/videostudio/v26/ ... ub=1389855 that I can go to overlays -> basic shapes and add a few basic shapes, like an arrow.
But where is a standard rectangle?
Also, these shapes seem bitmap pictures.
Is there no way to draw basic vector graphics, like an oval or a rectangle, choose the thickness and colour of the border, the fill colour, the opacity, etc?
Do I need to draw them outside of Corel Video, using another program, and then import the drawing?

There are some graphic clips available from the Overlay or Graphics library, depends which version of Video Studio you are using.
I think these may be png clips which supports transparency, as do bmp which the program uses as masks via the Chroma options.
There is also a Mask Creator that may do what you want.
But yes using an image editor to create png images is always an option
There is a process called Customise Motion aka Advanced Motion, worth exploring , useful to animate our clips, arrows etc

So you are telling me that with Corel Video Studio you can import the png file of a shape, but you cannot draw any shapes inside the program?
I hope there's a way, it would be crazy to leave out such a basic feature...
If you need to tweak the fill color, opacity, border thickness, border color etc, importing a png isn't the best way

Hi
What version of video studio are you using?
Video Studio is a video editor not a graphics editor
Although we can work with graphics, use Mask Creator to create shapes, feather edges
Chroma effects to remove colours or add masks.
Customise Motion to animate clips, add borders changing size and colour.
There are samples in the graphics library, rectangles, arrow etc.
Video graphics as mov are available
We can edit clips on the timelines to render as mov, using Alpha channel that allows for transparency. Some samples in the Overlay library.
Oh there from tools there is a Paint Creator although i dont think that is what you are looking for.
What do you want to create?

Re: How to draw basic shapes (ovals etc)? Is importing from another program the only option?
I am testing Corel Video Studio Ultimate 2023.
My needs are actually quite basic.
Say a specific event happens in the video, I freeze a frame for, say, 4 seconds, and in those 4 seconds I want to highlight something which is happening, using things like arrows, ovals, rectangles etc.
E.g. a sports player is running, I freeze the frame, and I draw an oval to show that player X touched the ball before player Y, then add some text below.
Things like these.
I suppose I can import the pngs of ovals arrows rectangles etc with a transparent background, but where it gets trickier is if I want to change the fill opacity border thickness border colour etc.
Would you have any suggestions?
I have noticed that even supposedly simpler video editing programs, like Filmora, let you do this, typically adding a shape to a title.
Thanks!

Re: How to draw basic shapes (ovals etc)? Is importing from another program the only option?
'tis easy to do, and you don't need to freeze frames.
Example using the 2023 ultimate standard inclusions, starting a new project:
1. select the samples 360.mp4 item from the samples in the library: media/samples and drag it to the main timeline
2. open the library: overlays icon (vertical control pane for the library, just to the right of the preview screen in the main UI) and choose the animated overlays item in the list. Select the rainbow circle item from the list and drag it to the overlay track. Click n drag that item to position under the part of the clip in the main timeline track that you want to highlight/draw attention to.
3. in the library control pane select the text icon (big T in the list). Position the mouse indicator in the preview window, double click, and the text insertion box and marker appear. Insert the text you want which describes the highlight action. Using the options panels that are part of text pane, choose the font type, size and colour of the text. Click outside the text box to get the size handles around it and drag to part of the image you want the text to appear in.
See screenshot next Back to main UI.
The project should now play with a coloured circle containing the text you inserted around the area of the main clip that you are highlighting. Adjust the position of the overlay and text clips to fit the duration required to fit the main timeline clip.
If the result is playing too fast, try time re-mapping to slow it down:
1. use the scissors to cut the main TL clip before and after the action commentary, making 3 clips.
2. select the middle clip which has the overlay and text associated, and the choose the time re-mapping icon in the timeline tool bar. When the re-mapping control panel appears, adjust the speed slider to give a speed result which meets the need. Screenshot: Ok, play, and repeat the re-mapping action and re-adjust as necessary.

Thank you for taking the time - that's really kind. So:
- the shape must either be already in the library or you must import it from elsewhere
- is png the best format? I need shapes with transparency
- I can resize the shape, but cannot do things like change the fill and the opacity, or the border thickness, right?
- Can I change the colour? Let's say I have the shape of a red oval, with a thick border but no fill (transparent). I want to change the border colour from red to green - can I do it in Corel Video?

Re: How to draw basic shapes (ovals etc)? Is importing from another program the only option?
I only included the library items so you could play with it yourself.
The graphic clearly has to be a png file (transparency) but you can get it from anywhere. Having found it, save it somewhere on your PC and then use the import facility to put it in the overlay track.
OR
you can use the items in the overlays library/animated or graphics options that suit (several choices), and simply change the colours of the item using the options pane/colours tab (the hue slider works pretty well). Play with them all to get a preference and then use those settings every time you want a clip highlight.

Yes that is the easiest and quickest way- is png the best format? I need shapes with transparency
Yes PNG images support transparency, the program uses png's for their effects- I can resize the shape, but cannot do things like change the fill and the opacity, or the border thickness, right?
We can resize, change the opacity using Customise Motion, applying a border will affect the full frame, the rectangle not the shape. Other filters via FX could be applied- Can I change the colour? Let's say I have the shape of a red oval, with a thick border but no fill (transparent). I want to change the border colour from red to green - can I do it in Corel Video?
Do you mean a halo shape- This may work--- Place the circle on the overlay track, Double click the image to open the Options Panel - Edit tab - Fill Color

Hi
You mentioned using the Trial version, the library content, in particular the Overlays Library pages may be limited in their content, for the full version I see 104 clips, most png with about 20 animated Mov having transparent backgrounds.
The attached shows the clips with yellow flag are provided with the full version.

@lata yes, I only see a handful of shapes, not as many as you.. Maybe it's to do with the trial.

Please go to the Welcome screen by pressing the house icon to left of Capture
Choose Store – then to the right Free – look for Overlays and Graphics Animations
If it is available for the Trial then try installing those clips.
