I have PSP 22 and have obviously set something incorrectly because my Erase tool is acting oddly:
All settings are set to max but instead of erasing, when I use the tool, I get a mosaic type pattern.
Any ideas please?

You have perhaps a Texture active in the Materials Palette. Reset the Materials Palette.

Had to do a full reset but now all working.
