VideoStudio 2022 Ultimate - Running VERY slow

Post by Ynot »

Not entirely sure what's happened in the recent past on my desktop machine though it MAY have been updating from 2019 to 2022 Ultimate (haven't tried 2019 as an option yet so will give that a go shortly) but just lately whenever I've started to create even a short video, importing loops, for example, to run alongside a music track whilst the audio plays fine, the videos on the timeline won't run for quite a while, then play as expected for a few seconds, then stall again, particularly when the track gets to a join/transition with the nest vid.

Looking at the performance of the task manager it doesn't seem to be a memory problem (16GB installed) and everything else seems to be running within expected parameters (though I'm not as au fait with modern PCs as I used to be - getting on a bit!! :) )

Any thoughts on what else I might try to see what's causing this very frustrating state of play??
Cheers

Tried to open the VSP file in 2019, but doesn't seem to want to open it, sadly :(

Note - running VS 2022 on a cleanly booted PC, nothing else obvious other than the standard stuff in the background.

Also - it seems that everything is running jerkily - even scrolling along the timeline and zooming in/out.

You've provided a lot of detail -- except for an important one: what exactly are you playing/editing in VS? Is the format always the same? What are its properties (right click a clip inside VS and go to its Properties). Is there anything 'special' about it: is it, for instance, H.265/HEVC video which is an excellent format but very demanding of computer resources. Yes, your computer has good resources, but have you tried using SmartProxy?

By the way, a .vsp project file made and saved in VS 2022 will never open in an earlier version of VS. That has always been the case. The other way around should, however, work i.e. a .vsp from VS 2019 should open in VS 2022.

Mainly .mov files (couple of .avi). Adding a number of different vid loops into the mix - the issue is from the start, not just when there're a lot of files being used.

I've grabbed the info from a half dozen at random

Image

I've done loads of this sort of vid in the past on VS X9 and 2019 Ult and didn't have any similar issues, tbf...

Unfortunately the image you posted didn't come through. Possibly too large?

I have had that issue before. Resolved by turning OFF the Enable Smart Proxy.

You have two video cards listed, Radeon R5 200 series and the NVidia GeForce GT1030. Which are you using? If Radeon try turning hardware decoder acceleration OFF.

I was wondering about that (which card) - how do I tell which is being used?

One thing that becomes obvious after looking at those video Properties in the image you sent is that there is quite a mix. None individually should cause any problems, but together there could be some slowing as VS tries to compensate for the various formats used.

One important thing to notice is that you have some DV/AVI in the project. However, the image doesn't contain the very important factor that DV uses Lower Field First although it can also be set to Frame Based (in modern terms: Progressive). But your image doesn't indicate whether it is set to Lower Field First or Frame Based. The mp4 video, on the other hand, normally uses Upper Field First, though can also be set to use Frame Based. Then there is the fact that your Photo JPEGs have been filmed using 25 fps (which is PAL) while the mp4 uses 30 fps (which is NTSC). Not a major problem, though, if they are set to use Frame Based as well. We also don't know whether your DV video is set to 25 or 30.

But one factor we don't know is what your Project Properties are set to use. I would hope, in view of what I have already said, that your project is set to produce a new video using Frame Based as its Field Order throughout. If not, and it is set, say, to Upper Field First, that could cause some slowness or jumpiness as VS tries to accommodate the varying formats in the project.
