PSP all versions - Edit tab crash with nVidia Surround

Post by surround »

As suggested by Ken Berry, I open separate topic on very specific "Edit" tab crash when in nVidia Surround mode.
Tested PSP trial versions: 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023.

Behaviour:
- PSP crashes every time to desktop when "Edit" tab is set as default in Preferences
- PSP crashes to desktop when openning image file using "Open with Corel Paint Shop Pro 202x", even when Edit tab is not default
- The crash effect is PSP exit without any message dialog
- PSP does not crash when navigating manually to Edit tab first, then openning image file

After crash, there is a *.dmp file in \Users\<user>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps.
Windows Dump Viewer shows info, which may help devs to track the problem:

Code: Select all

PROCESS_NAME: ntdll.wrong.symbols.dll
WRONG_SYMBOLS_SIZE: 209000
FAULTING_MODULE: 00007ffc79520000 ntdll
EXCEPTION_STR: WRONG_SYMBOLS
IMAGE_NAME: ntdll.wrong.symbols.dll
MODULE_NAME: ntdll_wrong_symbols
SYMBOL_NAME: ntdll_wrong_symbols!4308E1BC209000
Not able to test the behaviour with AMD Eyefinity.

This - nVidia Surround mode has some drivers or application?
If yes, do you have a latest version that is supported by your version of Windows 10/11?

Hi Surround
As you are testing the Trial the only relevant version is the latest provided by Corel / Alludo
Testing any older Trial versions is a waste of time.
A recent service pack has been provided for PSP2023 full version, it is possible that the developers have also updated the PSP 2023 Trial, I do not know if that is true or not.

To make sure you are working with the latest version I would advise you download the Trial again.
https://www.paintshoppro.com/en/free-trials/

Of course the functionality of the Full version is important and should receive similar tests.
Do you know if the full version shows the same problems?

I would uninstall PSP using the cleanup tool to remove the program.
You may be best to run all cleanup tools to make sure any left over files are removed, although generally each version is a separate installation.
Certainly I would do a clean install of PSP 2023, downloading PSP again

Hi lata, Hi Radim,

thanks for providing hints.

Testing on Windows 11 Pro 21H2 (status: up to date).

Using only pure nVidia Driver without GeForce Experience.
nVidia Driver just updated from 531.79 to latest 537.13.
Triple Screen nVidia Surround set using nVidia Control Panel.

Current PSP version uninstalled without any problem.
The downloaded PSP2023Installer.exe file installed PSP Pro 64-bit version 25.2.0.58.

The behaviour is same...
1. PSP opens with "Welcome" screen
2. Using Windows Explorer's "Open with Corel Paint Shop Pro 2023" causes crash after splash screen
3. Manually navigating to Edit tab and openning an image does not cause crash
4. Setting "Edit" tab is as default in Preferences causes crash after splash screen every time (needs reset to "Welcome" screen with SHIFT)

Hi Surround,

I'm Joseph Lin, Program Manager from Alludo/Corel. The issue you encountered is really interesting so we take some time to verify it.

Unfortunately, we only can create the surrounding environment based on two monitors due to HW limitation. We can reproduce the issue using PSP2022 Update1 version but everything is working well using PSP2023 Update2 (The same version you installed). Could you use two monitors and give it a try?

Once it happens again, please help to get the crash dump for reference. Please go to C:\Users\users\AppData\Local\Temp and find a *dmp file like (Corel PaintShop Pro_25_2_0_58_xxxxx.DMP). It can help us to trace the problem easily.

BTW, here is our testing environment for your reference. If you can offer any further information, it will be great.

CPU: Intel i7-8700@3.2Ghz
RAM: 16GB
OS: Win11 Pro 22H2 ver 22621.2215
VGA: nVIDIA 1050ti (driver ver: 537.13)

Cheers

Hi Joseph,

My environment is: CPU AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X, GPU nVidia GeForce RTX 3070, RAM 128 GB DDR4

I performed (A) three tests in Surround mode, (B) two tests in Extended mode and (C) Single Screen Non-Surround test.
Those three tests were: (1) triple screen, (2) double screen, (3) single screen.
HDMI cables were phisically disconnected from GPU card to be sure.

Note 1: Surround mode can be active even with a single screen, indicated by nVidia Control Panel
Note 2: PSP is set with Edit tab as default in Preferences

A. Surround mode tests:
1. triple screen - PSP crash after splash screen
2. double screen - PSP crash after splash screen
3. single screen - PSP crash after splash screen

B. Extended mode tests:
1. center screen primary, side screens extended - PSP opens in Edit tab OK
2. left screen primary, right screen extended - PSP opens in Edit tab OK

C. Single Screen Non-Surround
PSP opens in Edit tab OK

Desktop captured test videos attached.
Dump file via PM.

Windows Dump Viewer show similar info as before:

Code: Select all

PROCESS_NAME: ntdll.wrong.symbols.dll
WRONG_SYMBOLS_TIMESTAMP: 8f519da4
WRONG_SYMBOLS_SIZE: 209000
FAULTING_MODULE: 00007ffafc2a0000 ntdll

Hi surround,
Thank you for giving more detailed information. Now we can duplicate the issue on our system but found an interesting case. The issue only occurs when the nVidia surround mode is enabled first, install PSP2023, then work those steps you mentioned. Not sure if you had a similar experience.
Anyway, we can reproduce the problem here so will take a chance to investigate it later.

Cheers

Hi Joseph,

I was curious if the installation itself has anything to do with the issue on my pc, so I re-installed PSP in extended mode.
After switching to surround mode the problem still exists as before.

Anyway, I'm glad that this issue is investigated, thx. Would be great to use PSP without switching to extended mode.
