How do I move the selecion area (not the content), and then resize the area (again, not the content)?

How do I move the selecion area (not the content), and then resize the area (again, not the content)?

Post by Enochscion »

I'm using PaintShop Pro 2020 on Windows 10. I know that after initially drawing a selection, you can go to Selection -> Modify -> Expand/Contract/etc. However, if I want to move the selection area, I need to go into Edit Selection mode. I can then drag it to where I want. But after I have moved it where I want it, I cannot find any way to then resize it.

Use case: I want to select a circular area very precisely to the pixel--so I'm doing it manually. I initially draw a circle selection area, but it's never going to be perfectly either where I want it or the right size. In order to make it be so, I need to be able to both resize and reposition it until I have it over exactly the content I want, and then I can start working on the content (usually I'm just copying it and pasting it as a new image).

Ideally I'd like to be able to have both a drag and pixel numeric option for both resizing and repositioning, but I understand it may not have both available.

Thanks for any help.

You can move any selection outline by: 1) Having a selection tool active and 2) Right-clicking and dragging inside of the selected area.

If you're in "Edit Selection" mode you can use the pick tool to both move and resize the selection outline by dragging the corners just like with any layer or shape.

EDIT: Going to quickly note that the right-click functionality seems to be broken in PSP 2023 Update 2.

Thank you! Right click and drag helps.

I have two further questions about the Edit Selection mode.
1) Is there any way to lock the ratio when using the drag resize options?
2) Is there any way to enter pixel values to change the size? I can enter X,Y coordinates, but the only size change options I'm seeing are percentile base.

1) With the Pick tool mode set to "Scale" the corners of the selection box scale uniformly this maintaining the ratio. It's only when you drag the side nodes that it scales along only one axis.
2) Not really, no. There are workarounds but those depend on the selection. For example, if you have a square or rectangle selection, you can use vector rectangles, move them where you want, and then tell PSP to create a selection from the vector shape.

I do have a script that was designed for other things, but I've worked out a method for doing this. There are other bugs that I've found that need to be fixed, so it's not ready yet for resizing a selection in Edit Selection mode. It's this script here - https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?t=70225

I'll send you a Private Message once I think I have it working and you can download and test it.

EDIT: In case you see this version of the message first, the script has been updated. But I will also send that PM.

This part doesn't seem to be working for me. I'm in scale mode, and the corners of the box are showing the diagonal arrows away from the center, but it's still stretching wherever I pull it rather than maintaining ratios.

Not sure what to tell you. But I can show you what I'm used to seeing. Here's what I see, you can see my settings and everything. There does, at least in this version of 2023, appear to be a small bug where if I let go of the corner while scaling it might take my current mouse position and distort the scale, but so long as I keep the cursor on the node it scales perfectly every time. So in this video you'll see me scale normally, then purposely try and get the bug that I'm seeing. But otherwise, it scales perfectly.

Thanks for the video!

After watching that, I thought to test something. I have the same program installed on two computers. Same version of the software, and I just went through and made sure all the preferences were the same. It's working just like your video on one of my computers, but I'm having the problem where the aspect ratio won't stay locked when I drag on the the other computer. These are both running Windows 10, 64 bit, and the only difference is that the computer it isn't working right on is Professional Edition, while the one it works right on is Home Edition.

The computer that was recorded on was Windows 11 education edition. But it also works on the laptop I have at home which is Windows 10 pro.

Did you try the script as an alternative?

Okay, it looks like the script is working, thanks!

Still not sure what the problem is. I tried running the 32 bit version, with the same problem. I'm boxing up my computer for a move, but I'll try reinstalling after I get moved into my new place. Other than reinstalling, or installing on a different drive, I'm not sure what options I have to try to get it to work. It's baffling and frustrating.
