USB to Panasonic TV

Post by John S »

Hi All,

I've just downloaded a trial version of VideoStudio 2023 and have created/rendered an MP4 file - copied it to a USB flash drive - then tried to play it on a Panasonic TX-L32E5B television. The audio plays but the picture is a fuzzy grey screen. The same MP4 file plays correctly on my PC and Laptop (via the same USB stick).

- I have many other MP4 videos on the same USB stick that play correctly on the same TV.
- The same raw clip (MP4) plays correctly on the same TV - it's only when rendered through VideoStudio that it doesn't work.
- When I use a built-in free sample video from VideoStudio then create an MP4 file - that works on the TV.
- I have tried numerous different settings on the Share tab and so far none work.

Is there a restriction on the trial version that may be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
John.

Welcome to the forum.

I suspect your problem could relate to the formatting the USB stick has. Some flat screen TV's cannot play video which is on a USB drive formatted to NTSC. They can. however, play it if the USB drive is formatted to FAT32. So I would first make sure one of your USB drives is FAT32, and copy your video onto that, then try to play it again on the TV.

Some older TVs cannot play video at all, and will only show still photos stored on the USB drive. I have an otherwise excellent Samsung which I bought in 2008 which is like that. I see that your Panasonic TX-L32E5B is itself a rather older model, dating from around 2011/12. I suspect it might even be an old plasma model. So you would need to check the manual which came with the TV to see if it says anything about what it can play back.

Hi John
First i do not think there is any restrictions that will affect your video using the trial version

What are the properties of the problem file compared to the raw file

When you do Share, what options do you choose.
If you used “same as first video clip” then the render should use the original video file

Thanks Ken,

The USB is FAT32 and as I said, other MP4 files on it play correctly on the TV - it's only MP4s created by VideoStudio that don't play.

I suspect it's something to do with the settings used when rendering in VideoStudio.

Any other ideas?

John.

Thanks Trevor,

I've narrowed down the problem to my TV. The MP4 files play on other newer TVs. The Technical Information in my TVs manual states that the TV supports MP4 files with the following Video codec:
DivX3, DivX4, DivX5, DivX6, H.264 BP/MP/HP, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 SP/ASP. (Not sure what BP/MP/HP is ??)

So I guess the question is: which settings/properties do I need to set when Sharing from VideoStudio?

Any ideas...?

Regards,
John.

Well which settings have you already used?
the properties of the problem file and the properties of the original would be helpful

You are best to retain the original videos settings as that should retain the original quality.

You have tried the Sample videos which works, the Lake_sample it is NTSC using 30fps / 29fps,
again we dont know your original video properties, are you in the UK using Pal 25fps.

You mention having other MP4 videos on the USB that play ok, what are their properties?

If the raw file plays on TV , then Share - Same as First Clip will reproduce a video using the same settings.

Trevor,

Thanks very much for your reply. I'm just about to go away on holiday for two weeks. When I come back I'll go through all the various file properties in detail and I'll get back to you with more info (and hopefully a solution). Thanks again.

John.

The other thing to look out for when you get back home is whether you have produced an mp4 in VS but using the H.265 codec instead of the H.264 one which your TV can accept. H.265 or HEVC is a more modern codec which produces high quality video but in a smaller size. The resulting video is still called mp4 but the differing codec will be important if your TV is not able to read from that codec.

Hi Trevor / Ken,

Just created two test MP4 files from VideoStudio 2023 (Trial Version) with the following properties:

(1)
Share Tab Settings
------------------
Same as Project Settings: Yes
-
Properties:
NTSC non-drop frame (30 fps)
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 29.998 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 3354 Kbps, 16:9
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 177 Kbps

and (2)
Share Tab Settings
------------------
Same as Project Settings: No
Custom
Format: MPEG-4 Files [*.mp4]
Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 29.998 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 3354 Kbps, 16:9
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 177 Kbps

Neither play on my TV.

Originally I used the "MPEG-4" button on the Share Tab to create the finished product and played around with the Profile settings using the "Edit Custom Profile" pencil button. This appears to have remembered my changes and I'm now unable to revert to the original properties for that button's settings.

Also, I've just realised that the "AVC/H.264" button on the Share Tab only works with the Full Version not the Trial. I wonder whether this would make a difference?

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated. I've got 4 days left on my Trial Version!

Regards,
John.

Can you try using the programs MP4 profile, 1920 x 1080 x 29.97fps, use the default data rate, that may be 15000kbps.

Your video appears to be using a variable frame rate and 1280 x 720, its possible your tv does not support.

You can render a few videos to different formats, short 1 minute samples.

I would expect your tv should support many formats
MP4, MPEG2, avchd if those do not play, rename the extension from m2t/s to use .mpg

Video Studio has a Lake_Sample, try playing that on your tv

Thanks Trevor,

Done three more tests:

Test 03
-------
Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
AV1 Main Profile Video: 15000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps

Test 04
-------
Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
AV1 Main Profile Video: 15000 Kbps
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps
...then changed file extension to .mpg

Test 05
-------
Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 6000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps

Tests 03 and 04 came up - "File Not Supported" on my TV.

Test 05 same as before, sound but fuzzy screen.

John.

Sorry for any confusion regarding re-naming, i was specifically referring to Avchd type video that uses Motion Transport with a file extension of mts, m2t or m2ts, if they fail to play on tv renaming to use .mpg may help.

Still a little strange that you are struggling with mp4 types.
Did you manage to use the Sample-Lake.mp4 video?

Trevor,

Tried two more tests:

Before I tried to render the Lake Sanple I got this message:
Do you want to change the project settings to match the video's properties so VideoStudio can peform SmartRender?
...and I answered Yes.

Project properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1280 x 720, 29.998 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 3354 Kbps, 16:9
44100 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 177 Kbps

Video Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 14647 Kbps, 16:9
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps

Test 06 - Lake Sample
---------------------
Share Tab Settings
------------------
Same as Project Settings: No
MPEG-4
Profile: HD (1280 x 720, 25p, 10mbps) - 2
Properties:
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 6000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps

Test 07 - my test clip
----------------------
all setting same as Test 06

...both came back as before - sound with fuzzy screen.

I can't see what more I can do - other than going through 100s of permutations on property settings.

With just one day left on the trial version, maybe it's time to buy a new TV!

Regards,
John.

Hi John

A little concerned regarding the properties you show, then you write Same as Project Settings: NO
It appears that you rendered the Sample Lake from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 720? Why.

The Sample Lake is here:- C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio 2023\Samples\Video
I would suggest that you copy this file to your USB to see if it plays on your TV without rendering to another file.

Corel did update the Share Mpeg4 profiles to use AV1, maybe its that new format that your TV does not like?
Then from Share Mpeg4 try the FHD option. Yes they are using 1920 x 1080, full high definition size.
Yesterday I did try a Pana TV, old model, had problems reading the USB never mind playing video, but was successful in playing MTS video and Mpeg4 Sample_Lake

Ok I have just run another test AV1 video is not supported on my TV

FHD on the other hand played without problems
Sample Lake also plays ok
Mpeg4 using 50 fps was recognised but slow/jerky to play
Mov files not recognised on my TV

Finally I tried 1280 x 720 mpeg4, the Mpeg4 HD option, no problems, quality acceptable, video attached
HD 1280 x 720_01.zip
Mpeg4 1280 x 720 sample
