Creating a Sketch in Painter help needed

I am a newbie and terribly confused..

I want to created a sketch( I do know how to do this) but then I want to use auto painting to create a layer that shows some of the sketch lines on the painting. In other words, a watercolor painting using the autopaint with photo and then showing distinct lines also to emphasize the shapes.

I have tried cloning, quick clone and creating a separate layer and then an additional layer with multiply, but nothing seems to work properly. And Im confused now.
