Closing PSP with Taskmaster

Post by john4647 »

I can't currently get 'search' to work, apologies if this has been asked/sorted before.

When I close PSP (Ult 2019) I then need to use Taskmaster to close the part that lingers on. This to enable opening PSP at a later time.

Increasingly I find, when closing the residual part of PSP with Taskmaster, the listed memory usage is very high, sometimes as high as 4GB.

Also, I find that I need to regularly close PSP, again using Taskmaster, otherwise the programme begins to run very slowly and 'crashes' or 'hangs' are more common.

Is this problem cured with PSP 2023?

Regards to all.

This can slow down PSP:
- Select 'Computer' instead of 'Collections' on the Navigation tab in the Manage Workspace.
- PDF files embedded in folders where pure images (jpg, raw, pspimage) are stored. Separate PDF files and images.
Try it and see if you get a better result.

Thanks for the reply.

In 'Manage Workspace' , I already have 'Computer ' selected.

I don't remember ever changing that, I just go straight to 'Edit' from the opening screen.

Try with "Collections" selected and not "Computer".
When "Computer" is selected, I think PSP is indexing the folders and doing some work after closing down. Should be confirmed by another experienced user.

I have always used Computer, not Collections, and don't have that issue or any issue related to using Computer.

I haven't had it happen to me in 2023 at all. I recommend downloading the trial if you're thinking about upgrading as this wasn't always universal.

But I'm also on a different computer (since my old one died) and can't tell if it's the app or the computer. I will say that when I saw this problem on my old computer it wasn't every time. It often seemed triggered by something but was never able to find a consistent pattern. Like I saw it most often when using scripts that presented a UI, but not always. Or when I let PSP index folders that tended to frustrate the manage/navigation views. (You can exclude folders in the General Preferences, along with excluding certain file types). These things just never consistently seemed to cause the problem.

It could also be a corrupted or bloated database file. Which needs to just be reset (deleted) if that's the case.

I think that this is also a problem with Video Studio. After closing VS (I am using 2021 ULT) the same problem occurs, in that the programme will not re-open unless you use Task Manager to close the residual part, or re-start the computer.

Hi
A while ago I noticed a problem when closing PSP, not sure which version, to test this I have now installed PSP 2019 and am having the same issues where the program hangs in Task Manager.
This only occurs after opening an image and applying any edits.
Open an image, close the program without editing and it clears Task Manager.
The installed version is 21.0.0.119
I have tried everything including the recommendations here, run as Administrator, but the program still hangs.
Its as though images are being processed in the background when the program closes.
There was an option File – Preferences – Auto Save Settings deselecting that made no difference
I have now installed the programs update now running Version 21.1.0.22, still the problem persists.

Going through all File--Preferences I came across Display and Caching, so deselected Enable Scratch Disc.
The program did close without hanging in Task Manager, however now I am unable to launch PSP 2019.

Post updated
Now running PSP 2019 again?????
still having hang issues.

Hi
Each time I open an image or File new I then apply some editing, usually the crop tool being easiest to use as I only need a double click to crop, then close PSP choosing to close all images rather than saving. Either way the program hangs in Task Manager.
Now I try another form of edit, I choose the selection tool, draw a shape, then hit delete to remove the content.
Now close the program, choosing again not to save, Close all, the program does not hang in Task Manager.

So which tools are causing this, or is it just the Crop tool?

Thanks for your replies Trevor.

I have been editing numerous files in PSP, each time using 'Crop', 'Brightness' adjusments and sometimes 'Rotate'.

i find that if I edit 10 or more files, after closing, The resultant residual memory usage can be several GB, according to Taskmaster.

Also, i note that before closing PSP, the prgramme runs much slower and tends to 'hang' more often.

In the next few days, I will try editing using only one of these tools each time, to see if that makes a difference.

Regards.

Sounds like a memory leak. Are you only doing simple things like crop, rotate, and brightness and contrast? Anything else? The only other place I can think of that's a known memory hog is saving edit history, but if that's all you're doing it won't be that.

Turning off saving the edit history is in general preferences, miscellaneous category. Small checkbox.

I ran a few more tests, 10 images, Crop tool followed by Brightness, Contrast, straighten, rotate, picture tube and a few more options. The images were a bit of a mess.
Closed PSP and choose not to save, close all.
Hangs in Task Manager with 1.6 Gb of Memory

Repeated the above but not using the Crop Tool
Program closes showing PSP in Background processes, but does clears from Task Manager after a few seconds.

seems like the crop tool is culprit here?

By the way Save Edit History was already deselected

I tested the system as follows:

1. Edit file using just 'Brightness' tool, result, no residual programme viewed in Taskmaster. PSP opened normally next time.

2 Edit file using just 'Rotate' tool, result, no residual programme viewed in Taskmaster. PSP opened normally next time.

3 Edit file using just 'Crop' tool, result residual (420 Mb) viewed in Taskmaster. PSP would not open until this residual was closed in Taskmaster.

So, it seems that possibly the 'Crop' tool is at fault.

However, I wonder why the same (residual) thing occurs in Video studio??

Just an outright guess and assumption here. If "not closing" is the symptom and not the problem it would make sense.

For example, pretend the reason i definitely a memory leak or sub-process that won't release it's memory, and both VS and PSP use a similar load/unload system that can't unload the program properly due to the leak you can have different things cause the leak but result in the same symptom.

Hi John
Regarding Video Studio, you should raise a topic there.
Yes VS has suffered a little, the difference is that with PSP is we have identified the culprit, fixing that is another matter, you should report this to Corel / Alludo support whether they will fix things for the older PSP 2019 is debatable.
