Crop bigger

Post by Samc »

I need to prepart my photos before having them printed at CVS. There are lots of times that I want the whole photo printed but the aspect ratio is different than 4 x 6 and hence CVS randomly chops off the top or bottom.

I fix this by adding white to the left and forcing the picture have a 4 x 6 aspect ratio (copy, new image, paste, merge, save). This is very time consuming in PhotoImpact 7. Is there a fast method?

This is just normal. Even pictures from a digicam get cropped when you print it. This is because there is no standard aspect ratio. 3R, 4R and 5R print outs all have different aspect ratio. That's why it's always safe to give allowance for cropping in a picture. But if it can't be helped, and you really have to print the picture without any cropped part, then adjust the canvas size in PhotoImpact and record it with the Quick Command Panel under Task tab.

For example, I have a bunch of pictures with an aspect ratio 2048x1536 from my Olympus camera. The details are very important and I want to print them to 4R (4x6) without anything being cropped. Then I do the following:
1. Open all the pictures with PhotoImpact.
2. Open the Quick Command Panel and go to Task tab.
3. Press on the record button.
4. Click on the menu Adjust --> Expand Canvas
5. I compute for the adjustment in pixel size to make it have an aspect ratio of 4:6...

x = ( 1536 * 6 ) / 4 = 2304 = needed width so the aspect ratio will be 4:6
width adjustment = x - 2048 = 2304 - 2048 = 256

6. Unchecked "Expand sides equally" then put 128 with the Left and Right adjustment.
7. Click Ok then press the stop button to stop recording.
8. Bring up the next picture in the canvas.
9. Make sure that only the particular "Expand Canvas" command is checked.
10. Press play and it will apply the same adjustment you just did to the first.
