Paintshop Pro hates my surface 7 pro, Erase & Brush don't work right

Post by InsaneXade »

I dont know what it is about it that makes it lag like crazy when I am painting. I colored my comic and went to shade it on my tablet, a Microsoft Surface 7 pro. A few settings I have on it is slightly odd for a pro, like I have the resolution 1368x912 instead of 2736v1827 with scaling at 200%. I play a game on it sometimes and it does not like the recommended settings so I halved it and set the scaling to 100% to compensate for it. I'm 95% certain that has nothing to do with it. Anyway I can flood fill with it fine, and all that but when I use the brush or eraser with it nothing happens. I've tried rebooting, killing unneeded programs, and waiting but it just doesn't work. I've been looking at Krita and it works well with my surface pro so it's not the surface pro.

In fact, PSP is the only app that lags with it. Selections bog it down too but it bogs down my laptop so I'm not too fussed with that. I make large selections to make masks for shading like characters all over a large page, so I kind of expect that would take some processing power. After all, the images that I work with are 5100x6616, at least that's what my line artist sends me. I just color and shade it for my webcomic. As I mentioned in my previous post I'm looking for a photoshop replacement, having decided to cut costs. A one time, smallish price is ideal but if I cannot solve this issue then I must wave goodbye and try something else. I would hate to do that because I really like how the brush can be hard without using another tool, Example: photoshop has both a pen (soft) and pencil (hard) with independent settings. A little annoying but not too bad.

Anyhow, does anyone have ideas?

Have you tried playing with the pen tablet settings in the preferences? I say "play" but there are only two options. And only if PSP recognizes them.

File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences
Miscellaneous category

Also what are your brush settings? And brush variance settings?

Have you tried with a regular mouse over the pen? Defeats the purpose, yes, but is it the pen interface or just PSP in general? One way to test is with a regular mouse.

unfortunately, the dogs got a hold of the cord for my surface pro so I cannot test until I get a new one. I will let you know when I can

I got my power cord and I tried out the mouse it lags, but not as bad, and once the pen decides to paint it ignores pen pressure. Here are my settings https://prnt.sc/K0V2v3Y2Jq_9 i'm not sure how to get to any advance settings but I used default hard round, only making sure it was hard as possible for a crisp edge. I do have a mask layer with multiply set for shading reasons.
