One thing I just realized, I was using this Magic Wand technique with an already white background and the same white color selected on my materials pallete.
I just tried it a second time with a non-white background photo and it didn't work properly. I think I have to adjust the materials pallete color to the background color of my photo using the sample picker tool, and I think the background colour has to be mostly uniform for this method to work easily.
I am going to play around with it more and get back to everyone.
I am sure someone more experienced can chime in and correct me in terms of my inexperience.

The Magic Wand tool works only with "simplified" backgrounds.
If the background is complex, you need to use other methods.
See here an example of complex background (the shirt is to be selected):

Re: AI Background remover not recognizing subject
Last night, I was removing the background from a product photo I had taken - a bag of candy - and I realized that when I selected Auto Selection as my background removal method, it removes most of the background, but leaves some of the background in certain areas.
So, I then kept selecting the remaining background that wasn't removed with the first try, and with my 2nd and 3rd attempts using Auto Selection, all the background was eventually selected and I was able to remove it all in the end.
So, that's my tip to anyone who is in the same situation as i am in:
Keep using Auto Selection on the remaining background parts that weren't removed in the first try and you can eventually remove it all.
You let Auto Selection makes it's first attempt and you use Selection - Invert - Delete to remove what the Auto Selection was able to isolate. Then keep using Auto Selection - Selection - Invert - Delete again and again until Corel has enabled you to remove all the remaining background portions.
When I first starting using Auto Select for my background removal method, I would always try once and then give up if it didnt work. Now I realize you can make multiple attempts and remove the background in portions to get to the result you desire.
