PSP 2023 not working right after installation

Post by Mark Swanson »

So, my old computer finally died, and I got myself a better machine. So, I thought I would purchase the upgrade to 2023 PSP Ultimate. Everything seemed to properly install but now I am met with crashing and some functions just stop working or do not work right. Things are obviously messed up. I am thinking that I should re-install the program, after deleting it first.
Is that the right thing? Or should I try something else? Thank you.

While this may seem counter-intuitive for a newly installed program, I would try resetting PSP before uninstalling/reinstalling. With PSP closed, hold down the Shift key and clip on the desktop PSP icon to start it. You should get a message asking if you want to reset it. Say OK. PSP should open, and you can then judge whether the reset has achieved anything positive.

Thank you Ken. I have done that but I won't be able to do much with the program for a day or so. I hope it helps!
On working with it before, different functions would not work! Such as selecting layers, I would select one layer and another one would be affected! And then finally I couldn't select any layer at all. Tghe Pick tool would also stop working, and if I used a different function and return to the pick tool it would then work again. That is just some of it, I was also getting crashes.
More later!

That happens to me multiple times a day with PSP 2023. Clicking on a layer often selects the layer underneath and if I close off the visibility eye of a layer it is often still visible in the document. It is often near impossible to select the bottom layer and undo at times doesn't work and stops on a error saying it is impossible. In those cases I've found it usually because a selection has been involved during some of the steps. I've been using PSP since v5 and buying nearly every version since but with all these issues I doubt I will ever purchase again.
When I can't access the bottom layer at all the only way I can fix is to save the file and close it, and then reopen it. This usually works. Sometimes I can select the bottom layer by selecting the 2nd layer and then the bottom layer will select. I waste so much time in it.

At times when the bottom layer is affected I've noticed PSP renames the bottom layer and I have found recently that whatever it does to the bottom layer they just don't appear in Animation Shop if there was a problem in PSP when saved as a psp file type. When I open the psp file in AS, the first layer is missing. If I check the file in PSP I can see it has been renamed _Original_Layer_. I've had to resort to opening the file in PSPX and resaving it.
I've never seen any of this behaviour before PSP 2023. I don't get any crashes like you mention.
If you have these problems my suggestion is to get a refund and see if you can purchase an older stable version

Thanks for posting that! You are describing some of my issues exactly. I have big troubles with the layers, and also with some of the other tools. I can't always resize selections and move them around. The problems are really too many to mention. I do own other versions and I have been a long-time user as well so maybe I will just install the last one I had no trouble with and wait for them to fix this. You and I cannot possibly be the only ones.

So I installed PSP 2021 and I have no troubles with that.
I upgraded both PSP and Videostudio together as a bundle and I sure hope VS is trouble free! I haven't had time to work with it yet.

Ok, I am at wit's end with this one. Now that I have used PSP 2021 for a little bit I am encountering many problems with that, too. These troubles never happened with my older computer. When I got this new machine I upgraded to 2023 and that did not work and had lots of troubles, so after trying a reset to no avail I re-installed 2021. It seemed to work at first but now I can't use it, the troubles are so many. Moving selections, text, do not work.
So maybe something in this computer isn't doing what it is supposed to.. and as far as I can see it certainly should. Anyway, what should I do?

As mentioned above my PSP2023 has mutiple issues but I don't have any of those in my PSP 2021 version, so perhaps something on your system is affecting it. Sorry I can't help but just wanted to confirm that the issues I have in 2023 are not evident in 2021.

You mentioned resetting to default didn't work so next your could try uninstalling any problematic versions of PSP and using the corresponding cleanup tools. Then reinstall. Here is a link to the cleanup tools https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?t=52337

If the problems persist you should contact Corel support. https://www.corel.com/en/support/ There are options for email, chat and phone support.

Good luck.
