capture gets the video but not the audio

Post by clif9710 »

I am using a AV (NTSC) to USB adapter with my PC to transfer video and audio to Video Studio Pro 2023 (just installed today). While I can get both audio and video into VS by using multicam capture, I cannot do it with video capture which gives me video only.

In VS capture, for source I have USB selected and for format I have DVD selected. I have looked through the user's manual but find nothing that explains (to me) this failure to get audio. The video capture info panel shows USB video but LCPM 48000Hz stereo audio, not USB audio. Can this be changed somewhere? When I click on capture options, I see that "capture audio" is checked but greyed out.

Hi
Check that your PC Sound – Recording options are set to use the USB, by default may be set to Line in or Mic?

Thanks for your response. I checked the PC audio input, found it set to mic and set it to USB. I monitored the USB audio input within PC settings and verified it is there.

I tried VS video capture but still no audio. However, all along multicam capture audio has worked fine and is selected (on the multicam window) to USB. So the multicam audio input selection is independent of the audio input setting of the PC. I'd think there would be a similar audio input selection for VS itself, but I can't find it.

Hi
I have not used my USB capture device for a long time so decided to dig it out from the bottom drawer.
Like you I am having lots of issues in capturing through my device (Ezcap) using different versions of Video Studio back to X9,
The USB device came with its own software (ArcSoft Showbiz), unfortunately that software also failed to capture the Audio.
I then bypassed the audio connecting it directly to the PC Line-In leaving the video through the USB device. Now I was able to capture the footage + Audio.

Even though the setup worked for (ArcSoft Showbiz) it would not capture audio using Video Studio, most attempts result in the program stalling.

I am unsure if this issue is a Windows 10 problem, maybe Win 7 would work as the usb device / software is quite old.

If you do own software that was bungled with the device you should try that.

Another option would be to use a Camcorder that supports Passthrough / Throughput, this allows us to connect the Analogue composite to the cameras AV In port, to output to DV-out using firewire.

Thanks for all the effort you went to to help. :D

I didn't get any software with my USB converter.

I guess I will have to make do with multicam capture. For my purposes it works ok, it just isn't as convenient as the regular capture that pops the grab right to the timeline.

What puzzles me is that multicam does get the audio, showing it on the level meters. That would indicate to me that Windows can't be an issue.

Might want to give ScenalyzerLive or WinDV a try.

What make/model of camcorder are you using? I don't think you mentioned that anywhere in your posts ... or I am going blind

And how is the camcorder recording? on tape seems to be assumed since you are playing it to convert an analog signal to digital so VS can use it, but it might be on a card of some sort (SD/xD etc). Quite a few camcorders made in the early noughties recorded on both: my first panasonic bought in 2002 at a Hawaii radio shack did that. If it's on a card, then just removing the card and plugging it into a card reader attached to a usb port should enable the PC to read it.
My experience of A/D converters (I have a kaiser-baas unit) is that even tho you have a device that is analog in/digital out via a usb plug, many of them have a specialised interface that VS needs know about to be able to read it properly. And this facility also means you have to "play" the recording on the camcorder in order to convert it. Such devices always come with a PC application to do that, even if you have never used it: the converter makers cannot assume that everyone who may use the device has a video editor and knows how to use it. Since your efforts to use a an editor are not working properly, see if the disk (may be a small one) that came with it is stiil in your disk box. If you can't find it, google the maker/model of the device and see if the manufacturer still has a support page listing, or a contact address, which has the software for it.
If none of that works, since these A/D conversions are a "one-time" per clip activity, your inconvenient solution is probably the best one: you only need to convert a clip once.

Thanks to all.

The camcorder is a Sony Hi8 purchased in 1998, the output is NTSC video and straight audio (left and right). Kudos to Sony for a 26 year old unit that, along with the tapes, works like new.

I tried the freeware programs suggested and though they show a USB option for source, neither one produces a recording of either video or audio.

Multicam is a part of VS isn't it? I notice that it can be run by itself and does the job of capturing from USB just fine.

Oh, and while I am here...should VS23 shut down by itself after it does a rendering? The rendering completes and informs me so, I click on ok and VS shuts down...every time.

Here's a workaround for those kinds of devices.

The solution is to take the audio out of the camcorder and put it into the mic input of the PC. The video is captured from the USB adapter.
