How can I reduce the visibility of half of an image?

Post by psphufi »

Hello,

For a book cover, I would like to bring the front (i.e. the right half) to 90% visibility and the left side to 70%.

I guess that this can be done with a mask, but can't figure out how to do it.

Use a mask and a gradient of grays.

First make a gradient of grays. You only need two end points (beginning and end). Set one side to 90% white and the other to 70% white. Since you're wanting it to move right to left, I would set the right side to 70% and the left side to 90%. You can of course also use the gradient angle to flip it after the gradient is made.

90% of White (255,255,255) is (230,230,230). 70% of white is (179,179,179).

Then add a mask layer to your image. Use the fill tool to fill the mask layer with your gradient.

By "visibility" do you mean transparency or brighter/darker?

Transparency because you have to see something through?

No, I want to put texts over the image so that they are easier to read. A first draft is attached, but the background image has to be exchanged for the new image, which has to fill the entire cover. That's why I thought the right side should be a bit more visible than the part on the back cover on the left.
I tried to upload the picture but it hadn't worked as I see now.... Here again.

Uh! By uploding the original image I got the message: "HTTP error"... Is 16.5 MB too much?

But you can see what I ment with "visibility"?

Modify the Transparency with the Opacity of each layer:

What I still don't understand: How do I have to divide the image to be able to edit both halves separately? In addition, your processing is the opposite of what I have in mind: it has to be clearer on the right than on the left.

I know I'm being annoying! But I want to learn... Can you please describe to me how you divided the image into two layers - right and left?

Sure I'm happy to see a finished picture, and I thank you for it! But I would also like to be able to understand how you did it. Imagine I'm a young monkey who has to learn how to peel a banana properly.... :-)

Here is the banana:
Promote the background layer (right-click on it in the Layers Palette).
Duplicate the layer.
You have now two layers.
On each layer, you have the complete image.
In the Layers Palette, click on the top layer.
In the image on the workspace use the Selection Tool (Feather: 0, Anti-Alias unchecked), and select the right part.
Do Edit-> Cut. Don't move the selection.
In the Layers Palette, click on the bottom layer.
The selection is still visible in the image but now is active on the bottom layer.
Do Selections -> Invert.
Do Edit -> Cut.
:-)

PS: To activate the right pane in the Layers Palette:
File -> Preferences -> General Program Preferences -> Palettes -> Right Pane

PS #2:
Suggestion:
You must be able to read the text on the spine when the book is laid flat.

You can decrease the steps a little by promoting the selection.

1) On the main image make a selection of the first half of the image
2) In the layer's palette right-click the layer and select "Promote Selection to layer"
3) Re-select the original image
4) Hit the delete key ( Clear command) to delete the area on the original image.

You now have two layers with have of the image on each one.

Thank you very much, now I have learned something new! I can certainly use this experience for other photos.

Thanks also for the tip about the spine: it's annoying when there's a book on a shelf and you have to turn your head to read the text... ;-)

You all are wonderful: Best regards
Norbert
