Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Strange enough, you can save videos with mp4 extensie.
But when you get a mp4 file from someone else, then it is not possible to open it.
Saw somewhere possibility to change the extension in MOV. But then still I can not open or import it.
The file is 4,4 Gbit Can that be THE problem. Time 2 hour 18 min.
A smaller file 177 Mb about 46 minuten can I open in VS2022
The other solution I found through google is:
http://www.brorsoft.com/video-to-softwa ... tudio.html
I am going to try that.
Because it is movie from a funeral and want to make subtitles in ti for familymembers with light hearing problems.

VS 2022 can open most mp4 time has nothing to do with it. If it doesn't then the mp4 file has some "strange" properties that are not standard

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Another possibility is the codec used by the problem video. It is possible, for instance, that the video was made with the H.265 HEVC codec which also produces .mp4 video like that made by the H.264 codec. HEVC video is very high quality and smaller or more highly compressed than H.264 video. But it requires you to have the Microsoft HEVC Extension on your computer for Video Studio to be able to edit it. You can get the Extension from the Microsoft Store for a very small cost. You could even, with Windows 10, still get it free -- so do a Google search for how to get the free version.
The see if you have a H.265 mp4, if you can get the video into VS library page, even if not on the timeline, right click it and go to Properties. If not, unfortunately File Explorer won't give you the information. So do a Google search for a small and free program called MediaInfo, which will give far more information that you would ever want, but also tell you if it is HEVC/H.265.

You can download MediaInfo from HERE.
It's free. When in install it (it's a tiny program), open it and drag your video on top of it.
In View>Tree. Take a screenshot and add it to your post.
Or View>Text, copy/paste in post.

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Pardon me for jumping in, but I'm having the same problem in VS2020. In fact, it can't import a MP4 that was originally rendered by an earlier version of VS back in 2015! Here's the info from the MediaInfo app:

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Follow-on to my previous post: I just rendered a new MP4 video from VS 2020, then started a new project and tried importing that video to the timeline. The program crashed back to the desktop. Seems like something other than the codec, maybe?

I don't have VS2020 installed. How about a screenshot of your Export settings? What are they?

Are you able to share the video Purple Haze Intro, you would have to upload to a share site, One Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox etc.
We can then try on our systems.
It does seem unusual that this video is giving problems

THNX for the link to mediainfo, works easily.
THIS is the screenshot and for complete also the text I see nothing about H.264 or 265 - google in wikipedia says AVC 1 = H.264
In between I used brorsoft convert it to mpg Can see it now and edit it in VS2022

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Hi
Two things regarding the video
1. Codec is AV1 video, I do not think 2022 supports av1, 2023 however has been updated and should support av1, I would suggest downloading the trial to see if that works.
2. The frame rate is variable, video studio has had problems running variable frame rates
As you converted the video I assume that would use a constant frame rate, although I would have converted to mp4 avc (not avc1) rather than mpg
Again try the trial version 2023, or provide us with a short sample and we can test for you

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Hi sheng-si
I managed to download the avc1 video from vimeo, that did not open using 2022 or 2023 both giving a file format mismatch
Whilst viewing Media Info I noticed at the top a promotion for WinX Hd Converter
That seemed to convert the video retaining AVC1, the first attempt was a 5 minute trial convert. I had struggled using other converters, the Win X seemed easier to use just choosing the recommended profile.
The converted videos opened using 2022 and 2023
Note that the video I downloaded from Vimeo was using 25fps whereas your video used 30fps
Videos when added to the timelines did show the messages to match the project settings, video played on my system without smart proxy, a little surprised at that.
The overall data rate had ben reduced from 3 Mb to 2 Mb which reflected on the Gb size of the file.

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Trevor -- can you give me the link the Vimeo which you used. I have been searching for an AVC1 sample, but without much luck so far. Everything far is telling me AVC1 is synonymous with H.264, and a couple of samples which identified themselves as AVC1 in their downloads appeared in VS as h.264 .mp4 and played and inserted perfectly in VS.

Re: Impossible to open MP4 file in VS2022
Trevor sent me the Vimeo link and I downloaded the clip. However, like Trevor, I could not open it in VS 2023 and got the same File Format Mismatch error as Trevor. MediaInfo said the codec used was "mp42" -- I have never seen that added 2 before.
I decided to try to convert it using Handbrake. That turned into a disaster. I set it to 25 fps 1920 x 1080, standard mp4. The conversion began but said it would take just under 20 minutes. It went for a few minutes, but then the computer crashed! I don't mean the program -- the whole computer did. However, it was the strangest crash I have ever seen. The computer itself showed its main operating lights as being on, though a little yellow light that it has to show it is doing things was not turned on. The monitor reported no signal. And when I tried to turn off the computer by pressing the start button for the usual 10 seconds or more, nothing happened! I had to physically pull out the power cord to turn off the lights. When I reinserted the cord and pressed the start button, everything started up again and it all works properly. I am a bit dubious, though, about continuing the experiments...
Anyway, I downloaded the conversion Trevor had made using WinX converter, and like him, found that it worked perfectly in VS. I might note that the original video was 3.36 GB in size, while the conversion was only 1.91 GB -- though the difference in size was possibly because, as Trevor indicated, only a 'trial' conversion.
