Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
I have a 20 second long video clip. It is a drone shot at sunset, with the drone going up pointing at the sun against a hill in the distance. I want to reverse the video so that the drone is going down, and this will approximate a fast-forward sunset.
I have tried the time remapping tool, but I can't make it work in the way I want. The old demo video on YouTube (found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90Ohl2-X_Ag) is awfully confusing, as it combines multiple time remapping effects, and I can't tell how it works. All I want is to reverse the video.
Simply clicking on the Reverse button and clicking OK on the time remapping panel does not reverse the video, and in fact adds 12 seconds of the original video to the end of the video. I've tried many different steps of trying to mark ins and outs and the Reverse button, but it hasn't worked. And in a couple of cases caused VS to freeze so bad I had to go into the task manager to terminate it.
Here's a link to the video I want to reverse: https://youtu.be/m1u5lbwI3wg
Perhaps there is an easier way to do this? Can someone please give me step by step instructions? I'm getting extremely flustered.
OR, is there a better tutorial video that will help me understand this better?

Hopefully, that link helps.
Just in case you're still struggling with it, I reversed it using DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.

Using VS2023 had exactly the same reverse video as you, rwernyei
Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
RobertOz,
I would hope so, I provided the OP a link showing how to achieve this simply with capable features within VS and a result in DaVinci in case it was needed for a deadline.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
Wow, that works! I've been working with Video Studio for a few years (just a hobbyist), and had to this point never seen that double-clicking on a click opens an option panel! Gosh, I'm such a noob.rwernyei wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 3:48 am https://www.videostudiopro.com/en/tips/ ... re%20video

Thanks for the assistance with doing the reversing with DaVinci. In times past I've considered using Resolve for my projects, but found the user interface to be a lot less intuitive to work with, and just didn't want to start learning a new product at this point.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
Glad I could help. Regarding DaVinci, its interface is a common theme with all professional software like Adobe After Effects, Nuke, Houdini, Blender, etc., the list goes on. Reason for taking the minimalist look is because all the power is under the hood; there would be no room for a timeline or preview window if they had to make icons, thumbnails and toolbars to make it easy, LOL! Blackmagic Design is a company not only known for both hardware and software but more importantly is their genius marketing approach. They count on everyone using other software to download their free copy of Resolve and learn at your own pace. Once comfortable, move on and buy Resolve Studio and get a perpetual license for $295 USD unlocking more advanced features. Then when one wants to upgrade their hardware, they know how to use Resolve to get the most out of their purchase. Example: You don't buy a BMPCC 4/6/8K camera to not shoot in BRAW just so you can use it with hobbyist software. That would be beyond dumb. As with everything in life, one needs to invest to be their very best.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
To add to the Resolve comment above. I own Resolve Studio 18, the paid version. It does some truly amazing things and allows you to edit, color, composite, mask just about anything and have total control over it.
There is a very steep learning curve, and just as steep hardware requirements.
They have attracted a lot of pro editors to their fold. But pro editors have the hardware and a strong background knowledge.
But don't discount the videos you can do with VS. It is a tool, and only as good as the person using it.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
The only thing I can agree with TonyP is that DaVinci Resolve is professional software and requires a steep learning curve. Hardware not so much. Generates optimized media files as proxies just like any other nle. I edit Full HD and 4K footage all the time on an Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop with HDMI output video clean feed to 27" Asus monitor with no problems. To be a professional you have to have the features at hand to improve your work and DaVinci fills that void. No consumer nle can offer that regardless of one's skillset. Best to keep practicing and hone your craft on software without limitations.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
Not everyone wants to spend hours and hours learning software and just want to edit something easily and have it look good.
All editing software are tools. It's the person using it.
To be "professional" can also mean getting paid for your work.
Obviously, Videostudio is not for you, so why are you here?

TonyP,
I have been here for almost two decades helping members. As a former Moderator I still continue to help. If you cared to look at the beginning of this thread, I was the one that helped the OP and went beyond by offering a completed file. I just happened to do it in DaVinci Resolve Studio because that is what I use. Both RobertOz in a snide way and yourself are making this about DaVinci by adding falsehood statements. You're the one with free time as much as you post here, my advice start learning with your so called copy of DaVinci Resolve Studio and make yourself better. No professionals use consumer nles, PERIOD. If you can get paid as a professional using mediocre software, I would enjoy it while it lasts before your clients wise up.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
rewernyei,
I didn't bring Resolve into the conversation, you did, yes? Maybe to seem self-important and "elitist"? So, you made it about Resolve, not I.
I just continued the "conversation".
And now you know how much "free" time I have because I am always here, because I post. Shows you really have no idea.
Let me help you.. 968 posts and replies in 11 years. Do the math... sort of messes up your theory that I have lots of free time.
It doesn't take long to read and post does it. And yet, here you are replying. You too must have a lot of free time.
And I don't have a "so-called copy" I have it along with the Speed Editor.
Now you should take your "higher than anyone" self righteousness somewhere else.
Maybe spend more time with Resolve to make yourself better too instead of lurking here in the lowly forum with "consumers" who use mediocre software.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
Hi rwernyei,
I honestly appreciate the assistance you give users here with your previous Videostudio experience. I think that we have had the discussion before that these two editing programs are aimed at two different market segments and both cater to their user base effectively. Not eveyone has a BMPCC or wants or needs to. It is far more important what you put on your timeline rather than which program it is placed on. I use both programs for different kinds of projects. I have seen excellent short films edited with Videostudio and what amounted to not much more than random cat shots with someone with a Blackmagic camera. No software is perfect and if you look at the Resolve forum it is filled with users having problems with random crashes, lost projects, and rendering issues. The reversed footage that you gave advice on will look no more reversed in Resolve than in Videostudio. I hope you will continue to assist other Videostudio users without casting aspersions on what they are currently working with.

Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
It's time this post was locked by the moderators, rwernyei is making this personnel, which, as a former moderator he knows is against the forum rules and the original OP question has been resolved
Re: Tell me how to reverse a video clip!
For the record, none of you helped the OP. I did. The rest is the just bandwagon DaVinci hating. Need I say more?
