Hi all,
I am recording my self speaking on my iPhone and transfer the recorded MOV files to my computer. I do tend to speak a bit slowly, so I want to increase the playback speed. In VS2019, which I have just upgraded from, I could almost always increase the playback speed with 5-8% without losing audio quality.
In VS2023, I cannot even increase the playback speed with 1%, without getting random noise spikes across the entire clip.
Is there a way to fix this?
best regards
Morten

Re: VS2023 Speed/Time lapse adds random noise spikes in audio
I just did a little bit of experimenting, but the problem still occurs.
I have done the following:
1) separated the sound from the clip and made sure the sound is perfect at the increased speed (I used an external program to do this).
2) Added the movie clip and the new sound clip into a new VS project. Now the movie clip is playing 8% slower than the sound clip, but when I play it, the sound is perfect. Of course the sound and movie are now out of sync.
3) So I speed up the movie clip with 8% to get that back into sync.
4) I make sure the movie clip is muted, so that only the sound clip plays sound.
Result: The noise sparks occur again. So it is the movie clip that adds the noise spikes, even though it is muted.
If I change the speed of the movie clip back to the normal 1x, the sound is perfect again

Hello MortenEsser
and welcome to the forums
You could of course install 2019 to complete the project, you would have to start a new project for 2019.
I suspect the video recorded is using a variable frame rate, something that video studio may have issues with especially when changing the payback speed.
If you were to convert your Mov to use a constant frame rate, then adding speed option to the new video may overcome the strange audio spikes.
At one time I thought using Speed/timelapse on a video actually disabled the audio, Hmmm

I'm using my iphone to record the a-roll. It looks like the frame rate is set to 30, and I have the option to go for 60. I will try that tomorrow and see if that helps. But i'm no expert here.
There are various ways to play with the playback speed, and if you use the Speed/Time lapse feature or you Shift-drag on the clip in the timeline, the audio is adjusted accordingly. But if you use the Variable Speed feature, it says to audio is removed.

Variable frame rates
The standard constant frame rates for Pal are 25fps or 50fps
Using NTSC these will be 29.97fps -30fps – 60fps or 59.94 fps.
Right click your clip within the library or time, choose properties, if you have any other rate than the above then most likely is a variable frame rate. 29.225 frames per second for example is a variable rate.
If you do decide to install 2019 you do not have to uninstall 2023, you can only run one program at a time
I would Install only the Main program, from the installer choose Custom will allow you to deselect the Standard Custom and Bonus Features. That should provide sufficient editing features to test the Speed

Re: VS2023 Speed/Time lapse adds random noise spikes in audio
I just checked the frame rates on my clips and they are exactly at 30.000 fps. and I also did the testing with 59.945 fps, and the audio spikes also occur here.
But your workaround works. Thanks Trevor!
1) Complete the editing of the video in VS2023 skipping the Speed/Time lapse entirely.
2) Render the video in i.e. mp4
3) Start a new project in VS2019
4) Add the rendered video to the timeline and speed it up and the audio is perfect.
Is there a way to report this bug to Corel, for a potential future bugfix?

Re: VS2023 Speed/Time lapse adds random noise spikes in audio
You can access Support from the programs Help menu, that opens a web page choose Video Studio following the links for support.
I would think at some time need a sample of your project
In your last test you rendered the project to MP4 if the original video was variable that process probably converted the frame rates to progressive, then you opened the new video in 2019.
Did you try applying Speed / Timelapse using 2023? with the new video, all your previous tests used the original video to apply Speed

Re: VS2023 Speed/Time lapse adds random noise spikes in audio
I will try and create a support ticket.
I just tested speeding up the final mp4 in VS2023. It doesn't add audio spikes like before, but the audio is frequently corrupted, so syllables are missing or it sounds like im mumbling every time the corruption occurs.
