glitches when panning on rendered clip
(I don't know the correct technical term for it so I'll just call in glitches) In my rendered clip when the camera is panning across a complex background (ie crowd in a stadium, mosaic tiles) there appears to be glitches in the picture, tiny flashes. The glitches don't appear in the Preview. The Project settings match the clip properties. What is the correct technical term? How do I get rid of these glitches?

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Some glitches will occur when you pan too quickly. The idea is to keep it fairly slow even if you want to pan over a wide area.
I also find that I get glitches when panning if I have the Properties set to use interleaved video (i.e. 25i or 30i). So I have the camera set to use progressive/frame based instead (i.e. 50p or 60p).

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Thanks Ken. Good to know for future reference. I probably did pan too quickly. My current camcorder is frame based but my old TOD format footage (which I'm editing at the moment) was shot on JVC HD40 which is 25i.
Is there any FX/tool you would suggest that may remedy the issue?

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Others will hopefully offer some suggestions to you. I have personally never found any solution for existing video. I just apply the solutions I suggested for future video.
The only thing I can think of would be to try applying (separately of course) the two Mercalli filters which came with VS 2022. They are aimed at shaking and bumping in a video caused by things like it being hand-held, or taken on a motorcycle or car bumping over a road, or in a helicopter encountering turbulence... But I think the type of glitch from fast panning is a sort of micro jump or bump, and one of those Mercalli filters just might have a positive effect. But make a copy of one of your pans, give it a different name so it doesn't affect your project, and try out Mercalli on it to see if anything changes for the better...

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
If the pan is on the fast side during recordings there is little you can do about it, increasing the frame rates from 25 to 50 will duplicate the frames but is also duplicating the glitches.
You could try converting the 1920 x 1080 interlaced video to use progressive to see if that smooths things out a little.
As for Mercalli and the rescans, I did further tests and the MTS interlaced video seems the problem, when I converted those to Frame Based aka Progressive it overcame the Mercalli issue.
So if converting does help with the Panning and Mercalli, two birds with one stone as it were.

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
The rendered clip with the glitches already has Mercalli Pro filter applied to it (I tried both Universal and Glide presets). When I remove the filter the rendered clip does not have the glitches but is hard to look at because it's too shaky. So it appears that Mercalli Pro is adding the glitches. I'm not familiar with which advance settings to adjust (if any).
I tried it with Mercalli RT and the rendered clip looks awful.
As far as switching from interlaced to progressive I have to weigh up issues with converting my 100s+ TOD clips (then having 2 versions of those files) or I just live with the limitations.

Noted. I will experiment further. As for Mercalli and the rescans, I did further tests and the MTS interlaced video seems the problem, when I converted those to Frame Based aka Progressive it overcame the Mercalli issue.

I'm guessing that if I just convert those few clips (the Mercalli & panning affected clips) to progressive and leave the rest of the TOD clips as interlace and leave the Project settings set to TOD original format that that will cause an issue when rendering? Lata, I'm not sure if your recommending just to convert the few affected clips to progressive OR whether I will have to convert ALL the TOD files to progressive. As for Mercalli and the rescans, I did further tests and the MTS interlaced video seems the problem, when I converted those to Frame Based aka Progressive it overcame the Mercalli issue.

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Hi Rickmen,
I am editing HDV video (60i) and getting the same issues as you when using the Mercalli 5 stabilizer. I am going to try the older MercallI 2 plugin and see if I can get a better result when using interlaced video clips.
Update: Rendered the video using Mercalli 5 with the interlaced Cineform codec and the video came out absolutely perfect (other than my camera technique). No distortions or artifacts in sight. I will upload the file to YouTube as well as render an MP4 file using Handbrake.

How do you do that? I can't see how to select the type of codec to use. Can you explain further please?Update: Rendered the video using Mercalli 5 with the interlaced Cineform codec and the video came out absolutely perfect (other than my camera technique). No distortions or artifacts in sight.

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Hi Rickmen,
If you go to render the file go to "Custom" under the "Share" tab. Format; Microsoft AVI files [*.avi] Then click on the options cog wheel . Under "General" choose 29.97 for the frame rate. Frame type: Upper field first. For the Frame size choose 1920x1080 if shooting in AVCHD or 1440x1080 if shooting in the HDV compatible mpeg-2 mode on your JVC HD40 (which is one of the few camcorders I know that has this option!). Under the "AVI" tab choose GoPro Cineform for Compression (GoPro owns the codec) If you click on "Configure" set the Encoding Quality to Medium or High HD and leave the rest. Click OK (twice). See that your selection is reflected in the "Properties" box on the main "Share" tab. 'Start" the render with Smart Render and hardware encode acceleration turned off.
The file size will be huge but I hope you find that it solves the rendering glitches. You can then delete the large file after uploading it to YouTube, rendering it to a smaller MP4 using Handbrake (add TFF=1 in "Advanced options") or other. See if you get a good render from VideoStudio first.

Under "General" I don't get the option the select 1920x1080, only 720x576 or 720x480.
Under "AVI" I don't have GoPro Cineform as an option.
"Configure" is greyed out.
What am I doing wrong?

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Rendered clip's motion was very jerky (using Media Player) and slightly less jerky in the Preview panel but no giltches.
I used a Custom Profile:-
MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Frame-based
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 28000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
Edit 1:
Using the profile below the rendered clip was blurry/grainy but no giltches.

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
Rick
Both Ken and I suggested using Progressive video rather than Interlaced to smooth the video by converting from 50i to 25P, but only you can see the results
If there is excessive movement it may be beyond Mercalli’s capabilities to fix this particular clip.
another option by GEWB to deselect Smart Render could help
only you can see the results of the various tests and whether the results to fix are worth the effort
If you are able to share this clip then the guys here I am sure willing to have a go.

Re: glitches when panning on rendered clip
The only problem with simply rendering interlaced to progressive is that you are tossing out the temporal information of the 50 distinct fields and shoehorning it into 25 frames. The upper and lower fields of this camcorder are not identical so the rendered progressive file will not be smooth. It would require motion adaptive deinterlacing which Videostudio doesnt do.
I was hoping that the Cineform codec was included with Videostudio as it has been with other programs now that it is open source. If you can still find a download of GoPro Studio, it will install the codec but you don't have to use the program. I found a download here which I hope is OK:
