VideoStudio 2023 Ultimate - Constant Crashing

Post by dalessad »

Hello again Forum and Happy Monday!

Looks like I'm a sucker for punishment and I shouldn't be financially supporting Corel base on the amount of lost time and frustration I've had with the VideoStudio software. I've been using VideoStudio now for 4 years. Started with VS 2020, then 2021 and now just downloaded upgraded to VS 2023 Ultimate.

I had experienced severe crashing with VS 2021 (many reinstalls, cleanup tool and a full OS re-install), changing all settings/disabling performance check boxes. etc. and nothing seemed to solve the crashing. Support was exceptionally poor with generic answers and promises to get back to me with a resolution once they determined the problem. Nothing happened, no response from support and I abandoned my project as the crashing was dozens of times a day. Figured I'll wait for the next version (2023) to arrive.

I was expecting that VS 2023 (2 versions up from the 2021 version) would be more stable and that the development/product team would have resolved or fixed stability issue...... NOPE!

I've been using VS 2023 ultimate for 24 hours now and I think it's crashed about 15 times. Best part is there are rarely any error messages logged. The program just craps out.

When I first installed, I installed the base program first then ran subsequent installs of the bonus content, templates, etc. (2 extra installs). This was the reco from one of the forum moderators for the 2021 version.

I also haven't seen the VS2023 cleanup tool to attempt an uninstall and reinstall. It's really incredible.

My project has about 1900 photos loaded in the library and about 1300 added to the timeline so it's not a small project but I do have a fast i7 system with 32GB RAM, SSD and NVIDIA Geforce 4GB video card so I think I have sufficient horse power.

I have little confidence this will get resolved so I'll likely be exercising the 30-day money-back offer.

Anyone know where I can get the cleanup tool.

Is anyone else experiencing severe crashing?

I manged to get one crash report here:

Oh there's more:

I attempted a test render of my project in VS2023 which was built in VS2021 and 2 things:

1) There are several transitions that seem to hang so the output freezes in between a transition then jumps to the fully transitioned frame

2) There are some advanced motions to spiral in photos that have a picture frame artifact floating around the picture. This was an issue in VS2021 with applying Cropping combined with Advanced Motion which I was able to work around with applying the Cropping filter rather than the in-screen crop (easy crop).

So now, on top of the continued crashing, the rendering output is not usable until I find a setting combination that works, if at all.

Hi
Hmmmm..
First apologies regarding the cleanup tool, it is the forum admin that provide that usually after Corel’s approval.
I am not on my pc at the moment but will provide the tool asap.
I have to say that you should first use Programs and Features to remove the program before using the cleanup as this may affect files shared with other versions, prodad stuff etc.
As you have had problems in the past, i doubt using the cleanup is gonna help for 2023 given its a new clean installation.

When you ran 2023 did you start a new project or open an existing project created with an earlier version.
I have used 2030 for a while and found it quite stable, so would your issue caused by using lots of images, you mention 1900. Out of those 1300 being used, unfortunately that is all we know. Are they jpeg, bmp, etc

What type of edits are you applying to the images? FX filters, transitions, pan & zoom
If you use say 100 images do you still have crashes
Are you able to provide a Smart Package of your project so we can test on our machines

Sorry but the fault report means little to me.

Hi lata, Appreciate the quick reply.
I haven't tested using a new project. I've been trying to finish off a project I started last year and I've already invested well over 150 hours and just want to wrap it up.
I don't think I'm using anything overly complex, I'm using Cropping, Video Pan and Zoom, Advanced Motion with transitions.

I have a white dot background for all my frames then 1 to 4 images on overlays per frame.
I have a music track and a few simple titles on the timeline.
Video time is ~40 minutes and 1300 images (so far)

The Smart Package estimated size is 3.99GB.

Another discovery with my VS2023 project that I started editing in VS2021 and "upgraded"/opened in VS2023

There seems to be a chip taken out of the top right corner of some of the photos.
This happens regardless of any filters or transitions. If I just add the photo to the timeline it appears with a chip with nothing added in terms of size/filters ,etc.

See attached:
Top right corner seems to be "chipped"

Thanks Berry.
I'll try the cleanup tool but the burning question here is...why would anyone need to do a cleanup of VS2023 and reinstall when I just installed it 24 hours ago. I also installed it in phases as either you or lata suggested late-last year with my 2021 version.

Do any of these issues get picked up from Corel to investigate and resolve or are they just focused on pushing out the next version to generate hype and upgrade purchases?
Wish lists are great but I see crashing as an ongoing issue and now additional rending screw-ups and this image chip thing.

Regarding the Chip issue in the top right corner of many of my images, I started a new VS2023 project and added just one photo to the timeline. If in the main "video" lane then there is no chip but if the image is on an overlay then the chip shows for the exact same image.

Let's see what a reinstall does here.

I don't know if you got my email as I received a bump message from gmail saying it didn't accept an attachment with a zip extension. Go figure. But I have done a quick install and it is now available with all the other cleanup tools, though for the moment wrongly placed as number 2 on the list at https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?p=329686#p329686 We'll tidy that up in a little while.

Thanks Berry. I found it on that list in the #2 spot. No email was received.

I checked the date of the file in the zip and it's dated "2022-11-15 9:07AM" and when I ran the tool it referenced VS 2023 in the UI so I assumed it was right and went ahead with cleaning up.
I just reinstalled the base VS2023 application.
Let's see how this turns out although based on everything I've experienced over the years, I'm not hopeful. :(

SO glad to find this post! I was using 2021 but one day it stopped working and my IT dept were stumped and the support from Corel was less than poor! Eventually had to just give up and pay for the 2023 ultimate edition. Worked ok for one project now on my second one... only just started and freezing constantly and crashing. Driving me crackers and no answers that I can find that actually work.

Welcome to the forum, Yvonne -- and I'm sorry to hear about your problems. In order to be able to help you, though, we will need more information. What is the format of the video you are trying to edit? Is it the same as the format in VS 2021? If the video is .mov, can we assume you have the QT/mov codec on your computer? If the video is HEVC/H.265, can we assume you have the Microsoft HEVC extension on your computer? Is the video already captured, ready for editing, or do you still have to capture it? If so, how are you doing the capture? If you are already editing, what filters are you using? Any New Blue filters being used? What format are you wanting to produce from your project?

Hi Ken, thank you for your welcome :)
Had to get help with the answers!
I am trying to create a video I can add to Youtube as an MP4 from a couple of imported MP4 videos I made in Powerpoint. Something I have done already last month using 2023 with no issues.
No QT or MOV files are used.
laptop is 12th gen i7-1265u with 32GB RAM
Every time I try to edit the project file by splitting or adding voiceover etc I get about 3 actions and then it freezes and I have to close with Task Manager.
I am today trying with a different project to see if the issue is with the software or the file.
Thank you
Yvonne

Hi Yvonne

Just wondering if the Powerpoint videos are the problem, maybe Video Studio does not like the codec used there.
If you right click the videos from the library or timeline, select properties, what are they?
You could create an image of that panel to attach to your reply here.

If you have used the library to hold your clips you could try resetting the library to clear those to see if things improve.
First export the library as a copy / backup Settings Library Manager Export Library, followed by Reset Library.

Re: VideoStudio 2023 Ultimate - Constant Crashing

Post by AdamP »

VideoStudio 2021 and 2023 both crashing when editing a new simple VS Project 8 minutes long with ~50 pictures, Pan and Zoom on them, Crossfade transistions and a single audio track. I run 3 monitors, a NVIDIA 2060 card with the latest Studio drivers, SSD drive, i7 4-core with 16GB of RAM and was having issues with VideoStudio 2021 and now after upgrade, the issues continue. During editing at times, my screens all flicker, the desktop background goes black and VS hangs, looks like it comes back to life and once I click on the timeline, locks up and I have to End Task on VS to get things to come back to life. I do not have any other seen issues with any other applications. Below is my system summary and hardware info along with the relevant event logs.

Hi Adam
And welcome to the forums
Sorry you are having issues with the program

Given that the fault report mentions dwm.exe, in case there is some conflict here I would suggest you disable the Acceleration options for Video Studio. Settings – Preferences – Performance tab.
If that improves things then report the problem to Corel / Alludo support as the acceleration options should not cause problems.

If you feel the problem may be associated with the type of edits you have used, can you provide a Smart Package of your project to share with us.
