Transitions / Fade questions

Post by DaveG74 »

Hello! Experienced Paint Shop Pro user, but new to Corel VideoStudio.
I have some questions regarding transitions, especially Fade In/Out.

1) The "Fade to Black" transition seems to reach black halfway through, whatever the duration (i.e. in a 4-second transition, the fade will reach black in 2.) Watching a YouTube tutorial on fades, that user's transition worked this way also. Isn't the fade supposed to work throughout the full duration, or is this normal design?

2) Some of the other more visual Transitions don't finish (Wipes/curls/pushes, etc.). They stop halfway. Why does that happen?

3) How do I fade in/out using a different color?

4) When right-clicking a clip, I can quickly insert a "Fade In/Out" from there. But this inserts a "SimpleFade" filter. How does this differ from the Transitions fade? Can SimpleFade be customized the same way?

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi Dave -
Fade to Black works as you described. Set the time length and the leading clip fades out during one half of the transition period and the following clip fades in during the second half of the transition period.

The Cross Fade transition is similar except the leading clip fades out to the end of the transition period while the following clip begins to fade in from the beginning of the transition period.

If you think about this, you can see that a Fade to Black joins two clips and the total time equals the sum of the two clips. But when a Cross Fade is used the following clip is slipped toward the beginning by the length of the transition period. Thus the total length is (Clip 1 + Clip 2) minus the Cross Fade transition period.

The other transitions should work when joining two clips. Make sure the two clips are actually butted together before you drop the transition between them.

Not sure what you mean about a transition color. Are you referring to things like the rollers? If so, it is what it is.

As to the Simple Fade, I'll have to look at that.

Thank you for the prompt response. ☺️

In regards to Fade to Black, I neglected to mention that this particular behavior also occurs when the fade transition is applied to a single existing clip in the project. Whether the fade is in the beginning or end of the clip, the fade finishes halfway through the duration.

Second, what I mean by fading to a different color is, for example, fading to a flash of white (like they sometimes do in TV commercials or in dream sequences...)

Hi Dave
I do not use Fade to Black but prefer to build my own fades using a colour clip and x-fade ( Media Library – Backgrounds- Solid Colour)
You can also use a white / cream colour, half a second with a X fade applied will give a flash lookalike effect
What version of Video Studio are you using, then I could provide a sample VSP.
