Smart Proxy - ProRes Vs Custom

Post by RickMen »

I just upgraded from VS2018 to VS2022. In VS2018 my Smart Proxy settings for Video proxy were set to custom option:-
MPEG files
24 bits, 720x576, 25fps
Upper Field First
DVD-PAL 16:9
Video data Rate variable 6000kps
I read the user guide and it didn’t answer my question(s). What is the advantage of using the ProRes option? Why is it recommended? I prefer a smaller proxy file to save disk space & CPU processing. Can someone give a quick overview of the pros & cons? Thanks.

VS2022 ProRes settings:
MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 18000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Hi,
ProRes video files are not as compressed as mpeg so usually require less CPU power to decode so the timeline runs smoother. The trade-off is that the file size is larger. For my system, I notice an improvement in performance when using the ProRes option.

So if I reduce the bit rate to say 6,000 kbps (via create Custom version of the standard ProRes file) will I retain the performance aspect as well as reduce the size of the proxy files?

ProRes uses intra-frame compression so that each frame is stored individually. You should be able to significantly lower the bitrate while retaining the performance boost before serious visual degradation of the proxy sets in.

Well I've reduced the bit rate to 6,000 kbps and I see how I go.

Hi RickMen,
I just edited a video with Videostudio and didn't see a way to alter the default ProRes bitrate. The custom setting only seemed to offer MPEG-4 settings or other formats when creating a new template, but not ProRes.

PS Thanks, Trevor!

So the setting in the dialog box relate to Custom template even when the ProRes option is selected?

Yes as mentioned in the user guide, proxy files are either ProRes or Custom.

Hi Rickmen,
That appears to be the case. The "custom" selection shows an mpeg transport stream which is definitely not ProRes. I went through the list of available formats and ProRes wasn't among them. Perhaps this will be an option in a future release. If you have the storage available this really isn't an issue since you can delete the proxy files after completing the project. I edit 4K mp4 files and it is a much smoother experience using the ProRes proxies.
