StudioVideo 7 cannot load videos-or it takes forever to load

Post by Dacar92 »

Hi,

I am using ADS Instant DVD 2.0 with the software suite which includes Capwiz, Studio Video 7, Muvie Producer and something else I have not used yet (I forget the name now, at work). I do not know which version of these softwares I have, but thepackage was purchased last spring (March 2004) and have not been updated. I will check versions tonight when I get home if you think it is important. I will also look for updates and install them if they exist.

My problem:

Capwiz will freeze sometime into the capture process. Once it was 11 minutes into the capture and the other time it was 24 minutes into the process. It will continue to capture for the entire time I have set it to capture (90 minutes) but it will only record the frozen frame.

I have captured many videos using Capwiz (maybe 15-20 sessions) and this has only happened twice during recent sessions (not successive sessions).

My other problem:

Using SV7, when I try to load a video into the library in order to edit it, the computer will not freeze, but the cpu is working 100%. These vids are between 2 Gb and 3 Gb. I can understand large videos taking a short time to load, but it takes 15 minutes or more.

I have had my Norton Internet Security active for all of my sessions so I do not think this is causing either problem, but I will experiment with this.

Is there an easy explanation as to why Capwiz will freeze the video but continue to record the frozen frame? Is this a common bug? I guess the same question applies to SV7. Does this program take forever to load vids after you have several in the library? Is there a way I can make this program load vids more quickly for editing and burning processes?

My computer specs are here:

Sony Vaio Desktop, 3.0 Ghz, 512 Mb Memory,ATI Radeon 9200 Vid card.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I use an ADS IDVD2 for analog capture and have never experienced freezing. Some users complained that the unit runs too hot. Try a small desk fan on the unit.

What about the bit-rate setting? Capwiz will let you capture at 15 mbps but you really can't use more than 8 mbps. Too high a bit rate could aggravate a heat problem.

I always set Capwiz capture properties using the Custom User Defined at Mpeg2, 720 x 480, Variable 8 mbps, audio 224 kbps.

If it takes 15 minutes to load a video file icon into the libary either the file or the library may be corrupt. Is this file the one that was created when Capwiz froze? Try loading other video files. BTW, the Library does not actually copy the entire file - just a pointer to its location on the disk.

I capture in capwiz at 4 mbps for these particular projects bedcause the videos are already 20 years old, so quality is not really what I am after, rather preservation.

You make a very valid point, SV7 does take forever only on the frozen/corrput files. A few others I had l;eft loaded quickly. I reinstalled it today but it ditd the same things with the bad files.

SV7 can capture, also, right? I haven't tried it yet. It it a good capture program?

Thanks for the help. Capwiz seems to freeze on a bad video section, maybe a lot of noise in a section. I will try a different capture program, not so sensitive to bad video sections.

IMHO, it is a waste of time to try to capture from ADS boxes from Video Studio 7 or 8.

What about the Capwiz version? Download the latest and greatest.

Why do you say it is a waste of time?

I just captured a vid into SV7 and it worked. But it did capture at a higher res than I would have liked. The default capture setting captured a 1 hr and 20 minute video at 4.4 Gb, which seems a little more than I need. Any longer and it won't fit onto a DVD. Can you change the capture setting in SV7?

The n-1 versions of some of the ADS boxes had overheating problems that caused them to hang part way into a capture.

These problems seem to be mostly corrected with the current versions but you may have one of the older boxes?

Do a Google on the problem and you'll see lots of suggestions. A fan or removing the cover as a test would confirm the situation.

I have a recent ADS Xpress and it works fine!

Yes you can. On the left hand side of the capture screen you will see a button shaped like a gear that says "options". Click on it and a drop down will appear with two choices. Click on the second one "MPEG Settings" and another box will open up where you can ghange the settings. Note the last tab on the right called "Micrcodes" is where you can change from CBR to VBR.

I recently had a problem with CapWiz freezing during captures but could still capture in VS7 and MovieFactory. I uninstalled CapWiz, cleared the registry and reinstalled and all works fine now.

I found that (in the manual, imagine that!). Thanks.

VS7 captures video just fine for me, but it is quite a bit larger than what Capwiz would do. For example, there are two recent vids I captured, one from Capwiz and one from VS7. The first (capwiz) was 1.5 hrs long and about 3 Gb or maybe a little bigger but definately fit onto one DVD. The second (VS7) was 1.25 hrs and 4.7 Gb. Both were captured at 4 mbps. Will the Microcodes (VBR) change this, or is there another setting?

Is video quality better at CBR or VBR? Again, my goal on these particular vids is preservation rather than high quality, but I want a 1.5 hr video to fit onto one DVD.

Thanks again.

There is one major variable that affects the size of a MPEG video file, and that is the bitrate. In fact, you can change the resolution from Full D1 to Half D1, and unless you reduce the bitrate at the same time, you won't be able to fit any more video on one disk.

It is thus impossible for two programs to produce substantially different file sizes when capturing at the same MPEG2 CBR bitrate. Maybe CapWiz is really doing VBR recording and thus able to encode more efficiently.

Lets not forget the audio. LCPM is basically an uncompressed .wav file where as MPEG-1 L2 will result in a much smaller file size.

Yes it will, also if you compare the two files you have captured I wouldn't be surprised if the 4.7 Gb one was captured using LCPM audio. These setting you can also control.

Another note, If you have a video you create and it's a little too big to fit on a dvd just use DVDSHRINK to shrink it. You won't notice any difference in the quality and the program is FREE, it was written by the same guy who is now working for Nero writting code for Nero Re-code.

A couple more questions and then I'll let this thread die a quiet, sinking death:

1. Does DVDShrink affect which set top DVD players a dics can be played on?

2. I captured a 2:20 video last night at 4 mbps VBC in VS7. I did not change the default audio setting. It was captured at over 8 Gb. I have read on this board that people are fitting videos this long on one disc (not duel layer, either), with no mention of a program like DVDShrink.

Can someone please walk me through settings for VS7 which need to be set to make this happen? I am sorry to sound like an idiot, but this information is not in the manual and I am a rookie at this. Will the audio setting make this much of a diffeerence? I think not, but I may be wrong. Thanks in advance.

I've not run into a disk created by DVDShrink that would not play in a standalone player.

In order to use DVDShrink with UVS, the only change in the normal routine is on the very last screen of the Create Disk step: instead of burning to a disk, let UVS output to a VIDEO_TS folder or an ISO file -- either will work. Then process the output with DVDShrink, letting it create a new ISO file, which you can burn using the CD/DVD Disk Image Recorder that comes with UVS, or any other utility that can burn these files (Nero, EZ Media Creator, DVD Decrypter etc.)

I put 2:30 hours of Full D1 NTSC resolution video on a single-layer disk two weeks ago, without using DVDShrink. I used a bitrate calculator to determine a bitrate that would allow me to fit the project (~3050kbps VBR, AC3 audio), and I even had about 100MB left over. The source was a TV broadcast (the Tournament of Roses Parade from Pasadena), and the quality of the program on DVD was excellent.

Looking at the figures above I suspect that you captured at 8000kbps.

To Check your settings:-
With the captured clip in the timeline, right click the clip and select properties.
You should be able to see the clip settings.

Video Studio gives you a choice of several capture templates, one option is 'same as project settings'.
This is a very useful option when you want to use the same settings from capture to create disc.

But first you have to adjust the project properties to your needs.
File / project properties.
Under compression tab i would use Dvd.
THoff above suggests 3050kb/s for 2hrs 20 min. may be a good starting point.

As a guide
Up to 60 min 8000
Up to 90 min 6000
up to 120 min 4000

Once done save the project.
Then from the capture tab, options / capture properties settings /advanced / setting name / project setting value.
This will set the capture properties the same as the project properties.

Try a few short test captures to check the size and rate.

Hope this helps
