Punch-in/-out hotkey for subtitle?

Post by jizlobber »

Is there a hotkey for punching in/out of subtitle? As I review the video I'd like to be able to press a button to start/start a subtitle then go back later and fill in the text.

Thanks.

Your question is a little ambiguous. However, if I understand you correctly, you wish to set the sub-title start point with a single click. This is probably not possible because a sub-title does not act on a single frame but over a range of frames. There is nothing to stop you from setting the range of each sub-title (i.e., the start and end points) and then filling in the text afterwards.

Yeah, I think you kind of got it right.

Ex. While watching the video I would like to make subtitles between 1:03 - 1:08, then another on 1:15 - 1:21. I would like to be able to press a button a 1:03, then press again at 1:08 to create the first title, then without stopping the clip press again at 1:15 to create the second title, and 1:21 to end it, etc. Then go back later and fill in the text for those titles.

Having to put in the exact times for each start/end point is a bit laborious.

Well, there is a kinda sorta workaround if you use MSP for editing. Playback in Preview and press F5 at each place you wish to start a sub-title. Then use Cue Manager to dictate all the spots and transfer them into a sub-title text file. However, this would be almost as laborious, as you would have to add the endpoints manually and you can't copy/paste the times without an OCR software.

When WS3 beta testing starts (don't ask me when or even if), I'll have a look at the possibility of easier cueing for s/ts. We already have auto chapter point transfer between MSP8 and WS2, so this is good start.

Wow. That actually sounds worse. Oh well, maybe in future releases.

Thanks for the help.

During playback (in the Add Subtitle window), press the F3 key for the Start, then the F4 key for the end. Repeat procedure :D

It would be better to have a single key toggling, I think. Even better would be a mouse click toggling. That having been said, reaction times could cause errors if done on a playing video.

The current method works fine for me (everyone has their own taste).

You can Hit F3 to insert a Sub (it will default to one-second long). You can then hit F3 again, and another one-second Sub gets inserted. Only when you hit the F4 key do you modify the End Time for the sub.
