Been running one version or another of PSP since JASC. Last version I was running was PSP 2021 Ultimate. Ran fine, no issues. Then the hard drive died. Decided to upgrade to PSP 2023 Ultimate. Re-installed Windows 10 Pro, got all the updates and got the rest of the system in order. Then installed PSP 2023 Ultimate. Set my normal preferences. To test a few things I opened a simple image, the colorful windows logo with a white background. Selected the Magic Wand tool, clicked on the icon to select no color background, (what used to leave me with a transparent background, then hit delete. It appears there was no change, the selected area is still white. (See logo2.jpg)
Started over, and selected the same area, held down CTRL and clicked the eraser, and the selected area turned a tie-dye looking, using all the colors from the image. (See logo3.jpg).
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling several time (8 times I think) some times using the PSP cleaning tool, sometimes not. Makes no difference, the result is the same.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Did you promote the background layer first?
PSPX9 | PSP2020 | PSP2021| PSP2022 | PSP2023 & PhotoMirage installed; PSPX | PSPX2 thru PSP2019 owned but not installed

No, I never had to before. I'll give it a try. Thanks. Brb.
ok, promoted background layer first and the delete key seemed to work, saved as .PNG file and the transparency stayed...
But using the CTRL + Eraser (Remove) still performs the tie-dye effect.
