How to increase the shape/selection quality?

Post by deepndark »

How to increase the shape/selection quality? I mean if I draw a shape or a selection, the edges ain't smooth and sharp. I can see the steps in the edges.

Thanks!

There is usually an "anti-aliasing" checkbox on the Tool Options Palette. Turn that on. Anti-aliasing corrects this by softening the edges.

I already have it on. If I google circle images, then these don't seem to have stepped edges at all. If these shapes and selections don't react to a bigger dpi, can one call it professional tool for creating graphics then? Just wondering.

Do you work in raster mode or in vector mode?
Vector shapes are not jagged.

Yeah, we're going to need a lot more information.

1) Average pixel size of the image 32x32 or 3200x3200? (anti-aliasing can only do so much)
2) DPI is meaningless when it comes to rendering unless you're trying to render by physical size. Which vectors only really let you define by pixel not physical sizes.
3) How zoomed in are you?
4) What are you using for line style, line width, and color?
5) Are you creating the shape as a vector or as a floating selection?
6) Can you post examples?

For example here's a circle I made on an image 1000x1000 with a radius of 500x500, put dead center. I used regular line style with 1px width white color, and anti-aliasing. This is a 500x500 corner of the image to show how smooth the line is.

And here's a 32x32 image, radius of 16 on the circle, same line style.

I created a circle using the circle shape tool onto a vector layer and what I got was a shape more akin to a raster. A white line with a 1-pixel width and a black fill, much like what you said you made.

It seems like the edges are smooth more of on the diagonal areas (marked with the yellow on the pic) than over the sides and the top (marked with the blue on the pic).

I think that when the line is close to vertical or horizontal, the long flat stretches make the steps easier to see.
