Aaaaarrrggghhhh! This has got to STOP

Post by arturox »

Good day.

With kind assistance from folks on this PSP forum I've been able (Various threads) to get my new PSP 2022 configured as I want it. :-)
But...
Even though I have Menu bar-Help-Message preferences set as, "Do not show me any tray messages for this application", and the two other boxes are unticked, I still keep getting a message pane over my PSP workspace, "Upgrade to PaintShop Pro Ultimate... Etc"

I do not EVER want to receive these intrusive, unwanted messages again.

Is there some other setting somewhere I'm missing, to get rid of this annoyance?

Thanks
Ax

Mmnn!
Done some searching of the forum in the past half hour, and I see a lot of traffic about the subject, but no absolute solution. :-(

I guess that depends on what you mean by "absolute" solution. All known workarounds are in the "How to Stop Ad Popups" sticky - https://forum.corel.com/viewtopic.php?t=65942 which points to several support articles by Corel on how to accomplish this, both the official and extreme options.

For me, deleting the Messages folder always solves the problem if pop-ups occur after I've turned off the Messages options. This is usually because old messages are still downloaded. So deleting them starts me fresh.
1) Close PSP if open
2) In File Explorer type %appdata% in the address bar
3) Go to the Corel Folder
4) Delete the Messages folder
5) Open PSP and make sure the messages options are still disabled. The messages folder will be re-created but it should have a Messages.policy file that says "opt-out" in all communications.

If that doesn't work then I point you to the official recommendation by Corel.

Their most recent 2020 article - https://kb.corel.com/en/127276

Suggests that if the normal method doesn't work, then disable the tasks.

If the recommended solution does not work for you, I suggest to disable or delete the CorelUpdateHelper

1. Using the search box, to the right of the START icon from Windows, type: Task Scheduler and press Enter
2. Click on Task scheduler Library
3. Locate CorelUpdateHelperTask, right-click and select Disable or Delete
4. Locate CorelUpdateHelper TaskCore, right-click and select Disable or Delete
5. Click the X at the top right to close the dialog box

ATM. I'm trying the Messages folder method, and so far it is working, we shall see.

Thanks

Ah well! the upgrade message returned again this afternoon, despite doing the folder job, and also removing the two Corel task items.

Good thought Kathy_9, but as I only have two actual Corel products installed PSP2018 and PSP 2022 it was easy to check when I did the delete action... All gone.

Thanks

I've also done everything, including, yesterday, removing those UpdateHelper Tasks mentioned by LeviFiction. I have several Corel Programs, but have only opened VS and PSP in recent weeks. But I have disabled Messages in all the programs, and as I have said before regularly clear out the Messages folders in AppData > Roaming and in C:\ProgramData. But despite all this I still get the daily message about the Update which arrives every morning one hour after I open my computer; and I have just checked AppData and find the Messages folder is building up again...

Have you done a computer search for CUH and deleted all instances of CUH folders and files from all of your Corel programs? I only use PSP2019 and, besides turning off all messaging stuff in options/menu and stopping the tasks as LeviFiction said I haven't had any type of notification in ages. But, as I said, I'm using an older version of PSP, which might make a difference.

I'm mostly still using PSP 9.01 (Last JASC version) and I obviously don't get any messages over that. ;-)

I was chatting to a friend (Yes I do have one) about this 'thing' and he said GDPR,

I don't remember giving Corel or whatever it is now, permission to send me unwanted stuff... But then it's not a European company, so I guess, like many out there they don't care about GDPR.

Nb: The pop up offer ends today 25/11/2022 so maybe it'll just vanish...

So far today no Message window. Yehaw!

Having a thought about the JoeB suggestion, so I did a search for CUH and that returned 60 hits, so I'm not going there...

While in a searching frame of mind, I called Mr Google and asked a few question about the problem.

Boggling! Absolutely boggling the amount of stuff asking the same sort of questions; Methinks it's time 'Corel/Whatever it is this week', addresses this question seriously and sorts it out.

Corel does business (sales) through Cleverbridge which has offices in Cologne, Germany, so it has to conform to GDPR in the EU. I'm not sure about England/Great Britain/etc. I can say that I get the same messages in the EU despite having done everything mentioned here. They are pretty tone deaf. Either that, or the same loophole applies as in the "Don't call me on the phone" register: if you've done business with them they get a number of years that they can ignore your registration.

It seems to me that 60 hits is a lot for a person who doesn't have many Corel products installed. If your hits include registry entries I would add that I did not make any attempt to delete registry entries, only CUH folders and files. And I didn't have anywhere near 60 hits although I have various PSP versions installed and an older Video studio.

I was going to apologise for being a bit of a GOM over this issue, but today it returned with a new offer, so I shan't be apologising. :-)
