Windows optimzation tips for VS 2020?

Post by TomInNC »

Hi - I have been working (or wrestling) with various versions of VS (and Pinnacle before that) for well over a decade. For the last two years I've been using VS 2020 Ultimate on a late-model Dell laptop. It's got an Intel i9 processor, 32 gig of RAM, 1 GB SSD and an NVIDIA graphics card. In other words, it's a pretty robust system. I use it to run ProTools (I'm an audio editor), and in general it (the laptop) seems pretty sweet.

There are times however, when starting VS 2020, I'm surprised at how laggy the software seems; it can take several minutes to load a saved project. Any change of perspective (zoom in or out) on the timeline brings everything to a halt. Trimming a clip or moving an event really takes time. In general, it acts like it's running on an old 486 system; much more sluggish than my ProTools editing experience.

Lately, the software has been crashing in the middle of an edit with no warning, so my experience is not exactly getting better.

I'm usually editing either older home videos transferred from VHS with a Hauppage A to D converter (4:3, not terribly hi-def) or I'm editing newer iOS videos from an iPhone; higher definition of course. But it doesn't seem to matter what the source material is; everything moves so slowly in the editing timeline. I will say that once I'm done editing, rendering happens pretty fast.

Here's my question (and sorry to keep referencing Avid products) - ProTools has a pretty extensive list of "optimizations" for systems running their software; disabling this, turning on that. etc. Is there anything similar for Video Studio products?

By the way, I'm supposedly running the latest patched version.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, also let me know if I've left any pertinent details out.

Thanks!

I already work in VS 2022, I also worked in 2020, 2021, but I'll tell you the truth, 2022 is great. Or wait for 2023, I'm already very impatient with what they will surprise me with. Cau V.
