PSP 2023 - Issue with expanding or contracting selections

Post by PCalnan »

Hi there, long-time fan, first-time caller.

In using PSP 2023, I'm suddenly experience a change in behaviour that has me puzzled. Whenever I try to expand or contract a selection (Selections > Modify > Expand or Selections > Modify > Contract), instead of uniformly expanding or contracting from the edges of my selection as I've been doing for years, I'm now seeing that the selection is offset. For example, if I select all of the pixels in a square and then try to expand by one pixel, instead of expanding outward in all directions by one pixel, instead it modifies the selection by shifting it to the right or down by one pixel. As far as I know, that's not the behaviour it's supposed to be or at least it's not the behaviour that I've been accustomed to.

It almost seems like I've accidentally enabled a setting somewhere but I just can't figure out what it is.

Has anyone encountered this before?

Any assistance or advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks,

Patrick

P.S.: Already contacted Corel Support and let's just say that the chat support was "less than helpful".

Interesting. I just tried and got the same results as you. Works fine in 2022 but not 2023. I even tried resetting the tool but no luck. I'll report it.

PSP 2023 Update 1 lists as one of it's changes "Selection tool: Expanding rectangular selections now works as expected."

Edit: Reinstalled, version number increased from 25.1.0.15 to 25.1.0.28 - now I'm seeing it. Yes, definitely not acting like I would expect.

Has this problem been solved? I still cannot expand/contract my selection correctly; it's still off center and lowered. I've been back and forth with tech support for weeks trying to figure this out and its still not doing it correctly. They've had me uninstall PSP and clean the files and reinstall and still having this problem. anybody have a solution or workaround?

Not yet but it has been reported to the developers and Alludo (Corel) is working on a fix. This isn't something normal tech support can handle as it does require a program change/fix.

Until the hot-fix is released I do have a script you can use that simulates the original expand function - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l_0g2E ... sp=sharing

Or, if you want to keep sharp corners, this script scales selections - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cd4Fx4 ... sp=sharing

Sadly the only thing I couldn't do was re-create the preview option.

I wish I had looked at this thread before contacting support. I ended up uninstalling, using the cleanup tool, and reinstalling all to no avail. Because I constantly use expand/contract, I'm back to using version 2021. (sighs)

The Update Path # 1 for PSP 2023 has been released. This restores the original Expand/Contract function.

I just checked for updates on the top menu: Help > Check For Updates. It came back saying no updates available. 2023 still doesn't expand/contract properly.

Yeah you may need to uninstall and reinstall to get it. I'm just guessing here. But usually they either release a separate hotfix file or a full new patch. This time they updated the patch. So any new installations, or anyone upgrading to the patch #1 for the first time, will probably be the only ones to see the fix until a separate hotfix is released.

I installed the unpatched version of 2023 (I made a backup of the install files the first time I installed it) and was able to upgrade and I see the fix on my end.

This is so very frustrating. I want to use 2023, but it's not worth opening when the two major issues I'm experiencing are something I work with regularly. I just recently purchased 2023, so it's definitely a newer installation.
