[Q] PSP 2023 Minimum Specs & Windows 8.1 - Compatibility Mode

Post by CannonFoddr »

Firstly I know Corel will probably not give any "technical support" over this subject since I'm using Windows 8.1 (64-bit) with PSP 2023
I say this as each time I try running PSP 2023 on PC I get the pop-up
"Warning Your System does not meet the system requirements for this application. I you continue you accept that Corel provides no guarantee or technical support...." popup
- I'm hoping the community could offer some other solution/answer to my question

(It seems I'm one of the many users that have trouble upgrading to Windows 10 - always failing @ ~70% of the installation for some reason)

Anyway, when trying to update to Win 10 I somehow ended up in a boot loop so to fix PC I had to use "Windows Recover" & do a 'Refresh' meaning my Programs were removed which in turn meant I have to reinstall them all.
Like an idiot I somehow forgot to make a copy of my PSP2020 installation files at the time or to register it even so there seem to be no records on my Corel account of my ownership ( DO have a receipt for the payment of it so I know I did own it legally)

Getting back on subject.
I thought this would be good time to update my software so purchased PSP2023 (& videostudio bundle) - not actually looking at the Min Specs (BTW my PC HARDWARE does meet the specs it's just the OS that's wrong - I'm Win 8.1 64-bit while Win 10 64-bit v1903 is Min)- and now when starting I get the warning popup mentioned above

When I search for a possible solution for stopping this popup from showing on start-up - I found a post on these forums stating to TURN OFF 'compatibility mode' will stop it (BTW the post was actually for PSP 2020 & Windows 11)
Checking my shortcut & I find the compatibility mode was already turned off however I thought I'd try "Run compatibility troubleshooter" anyway as an experiment to see what'll happen

Here's the thing
- IF Compatibility mode is set to "Windows Vista (service pack 2)" the Warning popup stops showing up when starting PSP 2023
Any other compatibility mode above this (Windows 7/Windows 8) causes the popup to return

After all this background info - my Question is - Why ???
Why is it that "Windows VISTA" is deemed compatible with PSP 2023 but Windows 7 & 8 are not

Is there anyway to prevent pop-up when NOT in compatibility mode, am I "losing" anything while running in 'Vista' mode

Any help appreciated

Could be a simple programming error in how Windows reports itself to PSP and PSP checks it. Could just be an assumption that most won't be running on Vista at this point. It's just that old. No idea. I do not believe you're "losing" anything. Unless you're making use of Windows Pen features. Most of the features are built directly into PSP, the thing is they didn't build it in a version of C++ that's tested for compatibility with older versions or test it on older versions of Windows. They're building for making it forward-compatible. So any oddities running on Vista compatibility mode would have to do with calling Windows features that don't exist in Vista. Though I'm unsure what those would be. You'd probably find out once it crashed unexpectedly.
