Moving upgrade version of VS 9 to a new computer

Post by wfhuber »

Hello all,
For many years (since ver. 4 SE) I have purchased only upgraded versions of Video Studio. I finally got a new computer and was wondering how to get VS 9 to the new computer. I DO have all of the old disks or have burned copies of the downloaded updates (legally purchased). Do I need to go back to ver 4 and load each update or is there a better way.
All help appreciated and as always thanks a million,
Bill :D

I believe for VS9 Upgrade Version to install, you need to establish you have at least VS5 installed. For boxed sets, it is a simple matter of only inserting the earlier program disc into the computer and directing the VS9 installation process to that. You don't have to actually load the earlier version (unless of course it is already there.)

But in your case with a virgin computer, I would say you have to first load VS4, then VS5 (since the latter was a download upgrade of the former.) But after that, you can start the VS9 installation, and it should automatically detect that VS5 is on the computer. You can later uninstall the earlier versions if you wish. I note that it has been some people's experience here that some VS8 files are shared by VS9, and that uninstalling VS8 could thus remove some files used by VS9 and you have to reinstall the download version of VS9 after uninstalling VS 8. (With the boxed version, you can just do a Repair.) But I don't know if this applies to a version as early as VS5 (and rather doubt that it would...) Perhaps others may have views on this.

You do not have to install an earlier version. When the installer for the upgrade runs and complains about not finding a Videostudio installation, you can insert a non-upgrade CD of an earlier version, and it will proceed with the installation.

I have not long bought a new laptop and installed the VS9 upgrade version without any prompt for a previous version.

There are a few people who bought the UVS 9 boxed upgrade who reported that the CD they received did not say "Upgrade" on it, and did in fact contain a full retail version. That's likely to be the exception, though.
